NSAL called my parents "too old" for a puppy! (long)

Ok..so i wrote on the previous post about my past experience with NSAL and how good it was 14 years ago. Now let me tell you about what happened to my parents today. Keep in mind i still think they are doing a wonderful job in saving dogs lives...but how my parents were treated was horrible.

My parents lost their 14 year old Border Collie in Nov..i adopted her from NSAL for our family back in 95. They went there today with my oldest brother who is 42 to look at dogs. They found a collie mix pup they liked and asked to see her. They all spent a bunch of time together in the "get to know you area" and they decided they would adopt her. They filled out all the paperwork..gave their vet and our neighbor of 30 something years (fellow dog lover) as a reference. Both were called, and gave good references saying how the dog will be going to the beach, hiking and walking all the time. My Dad een told the one guy working there this and the guy said "wow this dog is going to have a great life." They are both retired and active...Dad is 75 Mom is 70...they climb mountains and walk alot...they are not old couch potatoes.

ETA: After waiting about an hour a young guy comes out and tells them they are APPROVED but that they can't have the dog they were looking at because they feel they should get an older dog instead, and that it's more suited for them. He did NOT ask them a single question about previous dogcare needs..as their 14 yr old required meds several times a day & to be taken out almost every few hours due to the meds. The puppy they were looking at was on meds for worms & on antibiotics (my mom wanted to ask what for)

Meanwhile i was waiting at their house, because DH & I had a party to go to so my parents were going to dogsit for us. My neighbor, the reference had called & told me they were at NSAL looking at a puppy. That same neighbor brought over a cage for them to borrow. My parents & bro come home and i ask "where is the dog?" My brother says "we didn't get it" and i am thinking he is joking..so i say "shut up...where's the dog?" To which he says "they were denied...the guy said they were too old"...to which i reply "what was the guy's name & what is their phone #???"...my poor Mom looked like she was going to cry, my brother looked like he wanted to cry and my Dad was upset that that's how they were treated after years of donations and giving a dog a great life.

So i call and ask for a manager after briefly explaining why...after about 8 minutes on hold i speak to someone. When i ask his name he will only give his first name. So i ask "what is your last name?" and he says "you don't need that"...i gave him my full name and i basically told him that i thought it was wrong that he look at my parents and judge by that alone that they were not "capable" of raising a puppy. My brother even told them if anything were to happen to them, that there were 3 children that could gladly take the dog. The guy was basically no help and when i said i wanted to speak to someone in charge he told me i could e-mail someone.

I am still fuming that my parents were willing to give a pup a wonderful life & this is how they were treated. Why even let them take a puppy out? Why not tell them upfront that they should be looking at older dogs (which i think is dumb) but seriously...why call references and stuff if you are going to deny them on age alone anyway??? They are familiar with active dog breeds and understand the exercise & stimulus these type of dogs need...anyway if you made it this far thank you. I really blame the one young control freak guy that denied my parents. They said even some of the other workers kind of look surprised by the "verdict"...anyway...i hope everyone else has a better experience. I know my Mom will never go there again..and not out of spite, but out of sadness. I on the other hand would like to go and ask for Mr. NoLast Name and give him a piece of my mind! Chat Icon

I should add that my parents are the only ones i will leave my dogs with when we go away, because i know they will be well taken care of. I can leave without any worries..and my mom & dad were able to handle 3 dogs for 2 weeks at a time when that would happen. Here's my Mom on a hike with her old dog.

My neighbor, who was the reference was shocked. She called NSAL and went off on them. She was told she couldn't speak to someone about the "case" since she wasn't family.

I should also add my brother doesn't think they are too "old" to take care of his 5,8 & 10 year old kids on overnight trips.

Wow, that must have been so sad for your parents! That's awful that NSAL would let them go through the whole process thinking they would get the dog just to tell then "no" at the end. Why would they do something like that??? I don't know how involved you or your parents want to get with this, but I wonder if you could threaten them with an age discrimination case? Or at least threaten to go to the BBB? It really seems like they had no reason to deny your parents and that they would have given the dog a great home, so if they're just going by their ages (which really isn't that old, especially since they seem fit and healthy) then that's just wrong. I hope they get their dog! Chat Icon

my friend tried to adopt a dog and was turned down by them many times he had to go to a local shelter. they claimed he worked too much and wouldn't be home for the pet. Which is partially true but he has a sixteen year old who is home after school but they wouldn't make any exceptions.

we are going to the town of babylon shelter to see about a kitten dh wants, hempstead shelter has free adoptions up until i think tomorrow (walk in and walk out with a pet) no exceptions.

When we were looking to adopt a dog, I did research on many of the shelters and found A LOT of similar stories about NSAL - that they would let a family bond with a puppy and then deny the adoption. My family had a very bad experience there - but since it was 20 years ago, I was considering giving them a second chance, but after all the horrible stories I read, I am glad I didn't.

Tell your parents to go to Bide-a-wee. We adopted from them 20yrs ago after our horrible NSAL ordeal, and then DH and I just adoped a dog there a few months ago. They are wonderful.

That must have been very upsetting for your parents. If their age was an issue then they should have addressed it with them prior to going through the whole process....

I can see some of NSAL points to be honest though. I'm sure their thinking of the longevity of the dog's living situation. G*d willing, your parents will live many more years, but if the dog's live expentancy if 15 yrs then they'd be in their late 80s, early 90s caring for themselves, each other, and a dog...

I go on a lot of the adoption sites and many of the reasons why dogs are given up when they are older is because their owners have fallen ill and cannot care for them or have passed away...

I agree..but my brother was there with them and told the guy that he, my other brother or I would gladly take the dog if caring for it became an issue...he still said no.

There are so many dogs out there that need good homes and the fact they would deny a dog a loving and caring home is a disgrace. There are plenty of local shelters that would be willing to give your parents a puppy and a chance for a great life. I got my buddy at shawn casey animal shelter http://scarnyc.org/

Thats horrible. To be totally honest, I was never crazy about them. Years ago, when we adopted one of our dogs from there, they called my dad who was on permanently disability due to parkinsons and the lady had to talk to him to make sure he wanted the dog and of course he did and when she got off the phone, she was nasty. I will never go there or recommend anyone. They should try Little Shelter in Huntington.

I'm so sad reading your story. Your parents sound like wonderful people, any dog would be lucky to have owners like them. I don't understand why they would put them through that and especially since there are backup people to take the dog in case they are unable to care for it anymore.

Maybe this doggie wasn't meant to be for whatever reason and the perfect pup is out there somewhere for them to find.

I dont' know.. am I the only person not shocked by this? You can't even get life insurance at that age, why would anyone give them a puppy with a 15 yr life span? I'm sure many people say they have a relative or friend in mind to take the dog, but we all know that is not always the case. Shelters wouldn't be filled with older dogs if it was.... it was an upsetting experience & NSAL could have handled it better from the start but I have to agree with the decision.

There are no guarantees in this life, as to anyone's life expectancy. I have lost a cat and a dog at 5 years old and 4 years old, respectively. The cat to liver cancer and the dog to leukemia. Both should have lived, much much longer. My grandparents adopted a cat when they were 70 - they are 90 now and the cat died 8 years ago.

ITA. We have no guarantees in life and if they are in good health now and willing to give the dog a loving home (and have the means to do so), I think they should be able to.

so very sorry this happened to your folks...its really too bad...my mom (76) got her dog 2 years ago from Nassau County animal shelter in Wantagh without any problem or mention of her age..(she is also very active), the dog is a min pin and was about 4 when she got her..

I would definitely find out who is in charge at nsal and complain..its not right especially if your brother mentioned there were 3 willing children to take the dog if anything were to happen...I hope they find their perfect furbaby...

I'm just speculating but I'd think that NSAL's responsibility is to adopt out to the most suitable match. So their focus and responsibility is solely on the animal, not to the adopters. Given that border collies typically have a very high drive and higher than normal exercise needs (esp in puppy stages), perhaps they didn't necessarily feel like your parents were a "bad" adoption match but that a younger, more active couple would be a more suitable match.

To dangle a puppy in front of them, go so far to make calls, and then say no is terrible. It's very unfortunate for them to go through that, but it may just be because they're just not organized with a good structure and procedure. If they were concerned about energy/exercise/lifespan issues, they should have evaluated other dogs and provided alternatives. In my opinion, never having adopted from a shelter, or knowing anything about NSAL except what I've read here.

That said, see if they can check out the New England Border Collie rescue. They look very organized and appear to care deeply about matching the right dog to the right situation.

ridiculous. your parents could live well into their 90's and be fine. or, a 30 year old could adopt a dog and get in a car accident tomorrow and die. what the heck? i think that is age discrimination. i'm very sorry they had to deal with that. how hurtful.

ITA. I'd even go so far as to say that it's age discrimination--against the law.

They have spectacular references, and yet they're willing to turn down a terrific family for this animal who is supposedly in desperate need of a home? Absolutely asinine Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
