Do you check your oil tank level? I'm glad I just did!!

We have barely 1/8th of a tank of oil left. Last winter, I checked constantly but they had us on a delivery every month. Once they thought they figured out our usage, now they've got us scheduled.

Except we haven't had a delivery since October 30th!! We live in a small ranch, 2 zones, so we don't really go through that much oil but I guess with the cold lately, we're over the norm.

I called and the new customer service guy tells me that the delivery is scheduled for Monday. I said, no it isn't, it's scheduled for tomorrow morning. Make it happen. Chat Icon

We're in Connecticut most of the day tomorrow, so I will have to call them before we come home to make sure they made the delivery. Or else I'll be raising holy hell.

Now I have to go search for threads on how low is safe to leave your heat on so the pipes don't freeze!

We ended up having to get a new tank because of this!!! We had automatic fill ups, but they were waiting too long in between. So what use to happen was, the sludge that was on the bottom of the tank would mix with the oil and clog up the tank, hoses and eventually it all just gave :( We had to replace the tank, which was underground. PIA. Ahh the joys of home ownership.

My mechanic told me 58 is safe for a day or two....because did i mention that the boiler decided to die in the middle of the night, the day of the storm!

Moral of the story, don't let your tank get too low....GL

I always check it, maybe I am being paronoid but I never want to be in the situation you are in. I could not believe we had a fill up about 6 weeks ago and we are on half a tank, when I called the oil comaony they told me it is becuase the weather has been so cold. I hope you get your delivery asap. Good luck.We fill up at half a tank because I am afraid to get an even bigger bill if we go less then half- the halfway bill is high enough.

Thanks ladies. We got our delivery today and our heat is pumping. It's getting warmer in here but not fast enough. Chat Icon

Thanks for reminding me about the sludge. I'll keep that in mind and make sure we're ok in the heat area. I'm annoyed at the situation but will make sure it never happens again!

We also got pretty low there for a while. I wonder if there is some reason they stopped making more frequent deliveries. (Were they waiting for prices to go up?)

I also thought the same, last year they came what I felt like was all the time and for some reason this season our last delivery was SEPTEMBER. After I saw that we didnt get a fill up since September, I called them and they said we were due on Friday - so they came yesterday, and left me a bill for 550 bucks. Chat Icon

Yes, I check it occasionally. I never let it get under 3/8 of a tank. As soon as I see it at that level, I schedule a delivery.

Anything less than that, it starts mixing with the sludge and it will cause massive problems.

We rent and the oil is our landlord's responsibility and the past TWO Januarys he has let it go too long and we've run out of oil (the first year, DS was only 8 months old!)

We'd remind him and he would just put it off and put it off. Over the summer he locked in though, so I've seen them deliver since then.

It was crappy though!

Reading this post, some of you mention about the sludge.

How thick does that get at the bottom?

Is there anything to put in to help get rid of that, especially if say we were having a new burner installed.

I have never checked. We are on budget and get automatic deliveries. I do know some friends tell me they check though.
