Lost my Henry bunny suddenly and devastated, long
I am still in utter shock. My husband is doing his best to comfort me but he is also upset. We left for florida on vacation on Dec 18th. My husband's uncle (who has cared for Henry very well in the past) came over to take care of him for 2 weeks. Henry was feeling fine.
The next day my husband and I went shopping in florida, he left his cell in the car. My phone rang, I see my home number. It's his uncle. He says he tried to reach my husband but couldnt get through and I have some bad news the rabbit died. I thought he was joking, although the man never really jokes. I said yeah ok haha. He said no, i'm not joking. He goes on to say he was fine this morning, didn't eat much but was hopping around. When he went to look for him a bit later he found him in the cage lying down and gone. All I could say was "seriously?" and he said yes, and very bluntly (that's how this man is) "what do you want me to do with him?". I said I have to call you back. I felt all the color rush out of my face and I felt faint. Went to find my husband. People were staring at me I must have looked like a ghost. When I found him I broke down in hysterics and said call your uncle. He's like what is it????? I just said its Henry.
We have no idea what happened. All my husband could say was that maybe he was older than we thought (we found him) and it was just time.
Lots of thoughts run through my mind. I know that rabbits can catch pneumonia easily and die. His uncle is a smoker and would go out on our terrace to smoke, and the cage is kind of close to the door, I know this is horrible to think but maybe that's what did him in. I don't know if he smoked at the door and left it open (the weather was FRIGID the night we flew out and there was a snow storm the next day here in nyc) or if he went outside and smoked and it was just the cold air in and out of the house? I'm sorry if i'm rambling but when something senseless happens you try to rationalize it and make sense of it. Maybe its none of the above and i'm just trying to blame the poor guy who was really good with Henry, and is a dog lover himself but perhaps just didnt realize how fragile a bunny is. Maybe it's my fault for not moving the cage away from the door. Maybe Henry died of a broken heart thinking we left him. I'm distraught with all these thoughts.
We came home last night and saw the cage etc. I broke down again. Thanks for listening to me. This is very hard to write. We only had him for 3 years but I felt like he was our real son. I know that his spirit is with me always and I remember all the fun we had with him and hours of playtime. We took him from the streets of Brooklyn where he was either left outside by people who didnt want him or he got away. He surely wouldve been run over by a car. So we gave him 3 good years and treated him like a prince, took him to the best vet around, got him the best food, best hay, anything he needed. I am a mess.

Re: Lost my Henry bunny suddenly and devastated, long
First, I am so very sorry for your loss. He was a beautiful little guy. He looks just like my Sam.
Second, please don't think that this is your fault in any way. I have three bunnies and as I'm sure you know, they are so very fragile. I don't think it was anything your DH's uncle did. Bunnies are prey animals and don't show they are sick until they are very ill. If they go into stasis they can die in a matter of hours. That may be what happened.
You rescued him and you gave him an amazing life in the time that he was with you. You are an amazing person and he was lucky to have you. Most people would not have done what you did. Unfortunately, sometimes these things just happen with bunnies. They are so frail and precious. Try to remember all of the good times you had together and please FM me anytime if you need to talk.

Re: Lost my Henry bunny suddenly and devastated, long
thank you thank you all for your thoughts and hugs. it means a lot at this time.
went back to work today and was busy so it kept my mind off things. it was very very difficult this morning, getting up for work, and NOT having to take care of him, feed him, clean up etc. very strange. i feel something is missing. now that i'm home, i still want to call out to him, to feed him and give him his dried cranberry.
