Re: North Shore Animal League...
We have 2 cats from there and had a great experience with both.
When we adopted my younger one he did end up developing an upper respiratory infection a few days after we took him home and the other one ended up catching it! So, basically the first month was rough...
However, other than that everything has been great. They have been extremely helpful and supportive when my older cat was having a hard time adjusting to the younger one. Behavior specialists would talk to us on the phone and guide us on what to do.

Re: North Shore Animal League...
We adopted out dachshund three weeks ago. He hasn't had any problems yet. Will be taking him to the vet today just to make sure.
We were given the little bit of history he has (he was a puppy mill rescue so there is very little history). We were told what meds he was on, and how to care for him (no jumping for my little one). We don't know how hold he is but other than that it was a pleasant expereince. Just know that when you have a lot of dogs together in one place there is a big possibility for kennel cough and other respiratory issues. Also look around there are other animal rescues out on LI. I used petfinder.com to search for other places to rescue from as well as NSAL. HTHs

I have two amazing dogs who came from NSAL. I will never buy a dog, there are so many great dogs in shelters looking for loving homes.

Frankie is the love of my life (after DH) and I've only had him for 3 weeks. These are not the best pics but they are the best I have been able to take.

We adopted our late buddy there. He was sick when we got him and they took him back and gave him the medical attention he needed. I think NSAL has great dogs

Re: North Shore Animal League...
We adopted both our dogs from there. My brother also adopted his dog from there - all great experiences. I love them, we've always dealt with the nicest people there. People were crying when we adopted our first dog because he was there for so long and everyone loved him.

Re: North Shore Animal League...
I adopted my family's first dog there years ago when she was about 3 months old...great experience even though she was sick with kennel cough & had an injury to her paw but they provided medical care...she just died at Thanksgiving at 14...she was a pure breed Border Collie & a rescue and the best dog...would definitely recommend NSAL! Re: North Shore Animal League...
My family adopted one of our childhood dogs from there and we adopted out cats from there in 2008. We had great experiences both times; however, we did get sick pets both times. My dog had kennel cough and one of my kittens had pink eye. Both times, the cost of medical treatment was free, though, and the vets were great.
ETA - We would definitely adopt from there again.

My brother adopted a lab mix puppy 2 years ago and he had a great experience. She is a great dog. He did comment on how detailed they are when doing a background check.

Re: North Shore Animal League...
We adopted Delilah from there almost 6 years ago! She is a rottie mix and was 6 or 7 weeks old and fixed when we got her. She had a slight respiratory infection that cleared up almost instantly.
She is my first baby, the love of my life. No other dog will EVER compare to her!
Here's my girl about a week after bringing her home
She got big fast...this was just a month later
And here's my big girl now....she is in love with my children and would die protecting them!
Sorry to bombard with pics - I just love her SOOO much!

Oh, I forgot to add that my good friend got her pup from NSAL a few months ago. Happy, healthy pup and they had a great experience, too.

Re: North Shore Animal League...
I dont have any experiences with NSAL but you might wanna consider adopting from a kill shelter, those animals hardly have a chance, at least you know the animals from NSAL are safe JMHO

Re: North Shore Animal League...
We adopted our dog from NSAL when she was about 2 months old, and now she's almost 2 years old. When we first brought her home, she had kennel cough (which they had informed us of and treated her for before sending her home with us). However, over the next couple of days, it seemed to get worse and she was very lethargic. We brought her back to the NSAL vet, and they gave us more antibiotics, which cured her. I think this is very common though when adopting animals from a shelter. Since then she's been perfectly healthy and very lively. She's a great dog, very friendly and well behaved. I think they asked for a donation when we adopted her and they required references, and they called and spoke to them before letting us take her home. They also made a routine visit to our home once, about a year after adopting her, just to make sure we were taking proper care of her. They had told us that they would do this when we adopted her. Overall, they were very nice when we went to pick her out. They let you play with and hold the dogs before making a decision, and they try to give you as much info as possible about the dog's breed, however it is kind of hard for them to tell what some breeds are since they are mostly mixes. We're still not 100% sure what breeds our dog is made up of, but that doesn't bother us. Here are some pictures of when we first brought her home, and some from this winter. Good luck picking out your new dog! Image Attachment(s):
