My dog is showing his true colors!
He was so good for the first few days...lured me into a false sense of security Now he's chewing on things in the house (like my good work shoes), nipping at us and climbing on the couch. He just climbs on up and curls up on the couch. I drag him off and tell him no but he just climbs back on. I know he's still a puppy and needs to be trained but I was wondering if anyone had tips to keep him off the couch. Right now we have an old crappy one, but DH and I want to buy a new one soon and do not want Jensen climbing all over it. How about the nipping? Any advice?

Re: My dog is showing his true colors!
get a spray bottle and put water in it...anytime he does a behavior that u do not want...squirt him...
be consistant in which ever way you decide to train him....when u take something away from him that u don't want him to chew, give him something that he is allowed to chew like a non eatable nylabone hope this helps!

When he nips make a loud noise like a yelp and turn your back to him. Puppies learn from their littermates yelping how hard is too hard. I know you might feel silly but it really works.

with the squirt bottle, you need to make sure it's on heavy stream (and have good aim!). i would also redirect his behavior to give him something he's allowed to do. he won't learn what to do instead if you just squirt him every time.
also don't leave things on the ground that you don't want him to chew.
awww jenson!
as for the couch..hmm that's a tough one. i would just keep getting him off it and maybe treating him when he's gotten off the couch. if hes on the couch you can get a treat, toss it to the ground, say "off" when he jumps off then good boy and another treat when he's on the ground. it'll also teach him "off"

Re: My dog is showing his true colors!
I'd definitely get him into training so you can learn how he thinks and what good corrections are. There's a lot to learn and it's best you learn the effective ways to train and correct now.
In the meantime, if you do a search on the Pets board and on that website link I gave you, you can find a lot of information to guide you.
To start with:
Be firm and consistent when you correct. If you correct him 9 times and let him 1 time, you're undoing all the other corrections.
Puppy proof your house. Put anything of value that can be easily picked up in closets. Push anything valuable to the back of the countertop or put it in a cabinet. Taken anything breakable off unstable furniture.
Correct, then supply an alternative so that they like being good. When he's on the floor, pet him and shower him with affection. When he's chewing on something good, smear some peanut butter on it.
It's all about rewarding the positive and correcting the negative. I would really suggest you get into a training class asap though, it's important you designate yourselves as the bosses.

How do I find a training class? Just do a search or do you have one that you would recommend?

Re: My dog is showing his true colors!
I'd do a search here on the Pets board, it's been brought up a lot over the past few months.
I'm sorry I can't help there, we didn't use an outside trainer. We read books, searched the internet, and watched TV shows and trained Brinkley ourselves.

I agree, or you can grab him by scruff of neck like their mothers would do and say "NO" in a firm command.....
They are mouthy so its something you need to correct now....

Re: My dog is showing his true colors!
Our trainer has been great - his name is matthew - he runs BeyondPetSittingNy.com -
Our goldendoodle nips at time but as a "correction" to us or in play, not in an aggressive way. He'll keep nipping unless he sees you as the boss. Our Maggie is bossy and loves the couch too. We've been doing the "down" and "place" commands on her bed which have been working... she still opts for the couch but that's my fault because I invite her up too much.

Re: My dog is showing his true colors!
Also, dogs don't like the smell of Vicks vapo rub. Our puppy was scratching at the bottom of the couch so we put some vicks on the bottom and no more scratching. It does wear off after a few days, but it's worked. He hasn't scratched the couch in weeks.
Also, they don't like Scope breath spray, or Sweet Breath, anything like that. Since we've put the Christmas tree up we've sprayed the bottom few branches every now and again if he goes to chew them even after us telling him no. That also works.
