feeding a cat under 1 yr
my cat is about 9 months old. we weighed him (DH got on the scale with and without the cat) and he weighs 12lbs (may not be accurate). he doesnt look fat, he is a long cat but he does have what looks like a saggy belly
I give him dry food, he can eat it all day (but he never finishes a bowl in a day) and half a can of kitten wet food in the morning and half a can at night (it is the small 3 oz can). The can says to give im 2 full cans a day.
He is a very active cat, if it matters we feed him science diet wet and dry
do you think we are over feeding him?

Re: feeding a cat under 1 yr
I only feed my cats once a day....a bowl of dry food each. they graze all day. If I see its a little low at the end of day, I will give them a bit more

Re: feeding a cat under 1 yr
What you're feeding him sounds reasonable to me. I give my cat (1 1/2 y/o) as much dry as she would like and 3oz in am and pm. She is a VERY active long but peitite cat.

Re: feeding a cat under 1 yr
First of all, your cat is ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!! Looks a lot like mine! I have 2 that are tabby and white
I give mine Purina Cat Chow (dry food) all day long. They graze all throughout the day whenever they feel like it.......
I also give them Fancy Feast once a day at night. I give them half a can each (and those cans are on the smaller side). My girl cat eats very little of it (she BEGS for it, but then eats half of her portion-- so 1/4 of the can) ... and the boy ends up eating the rest! I have a 2 sided food bowl so I put half in each side and they eat it sitting next to each other. Ahhhhhhhh I love them..............

ETA: It's possible he is just a big cat- Like I said, I have 2 and the girl is around 3, the boy is 1.5, and he about 50% bigger than her!

Re: feeding a cat under 1 yr
It's possible he is just a big cat. Males tend to be. My little girl is still tiny but my boy looks full grown and he is under 1 year old too. We haven't weighed him but holding him I can tell he is close to 12 pounds probably. He is SOLID!
Looking at the pictures he doesn't look overweight at all- in fact he looks long and lean.
The only thing is we only give him dry food. We are going to give him some wet food once he hits 1 year old- but maybe only once a week or so...

Awe, I think he looks just fine! He is still a kitten, which I have always thought the rule was you feed as much as they will eat.-and it doesn't sound like he is eating too much.

Re: feeding a cat under 1 yr
This is similar to how we feed our boy but we give him a ton of treats too
I don't think cats really over eat at such a young age. I think they gain more weight as they get older due to lack of exercise.
Do you have a lazer pointer? They love them and you can sit on the couch and he can chase the beam around - my boy loves this and I get him up and jumping too.
Edited to add: it looks like he has large feet - he will probably grow to be a large cat. Perfectly normal!!
Your little guy looks really healthy, I wouldn't worry!

Re: feeding a cat under 1 yr
thanks everyone.
I do think he is just a larger cat. he doesnt seem to be eating in excess and he plays and runs around constantly.
Im going to just watch him and maybe bring him to the vet in the next couple months to make sure
