What are you doing with your dog(s) for the holidays? [Poll]

The poll is for this year, but feel free to say what you did in previous years!

I'm not voting because I don't know what we're doing yet. I was just wondering what everyone else does with their dog(s) and the holidays.

On Thanksgiving we are going to go out, he will stay home. On Christmas Eve we will be at our house with family over. On Christmas Day we are going out, he is coming with us.

Usually the holidays are at my house or at my parents house and Petunia always comes with us when we go to my parents house. I guess I don't know what I would do if it was at someone elses house because I don't think I could leave her home on the holiday. It's tough Chat Icon

Stop leaving crazy people who bring their cats with them out of your polls Chat Icon Chat Icon

We have done all of the above. We have brought our cats to family for the holidays, we have left them home, and we have hosted...

I'll be honest if they're home we don't stay as long at wherever we are because they are 'my kids' and I want to be with them. My family understands that. They may not like it but they know that my cats come first. I am sure some people think that's horrible (OMG, how can you put an ANIMAL before a person *gasp*) but that's how DH and I both are & we don't really care what anyone else thinks about it - DH and I are on the same page with it.

Chat Icon I didn't because of the potty break factor and that you can generally leave a cat to their own devices longer than a dog. And because the last time I was at a family gathering, they poked fun at me because I was leaving early to make sure Brinkley was fed and walked. Chat Icon

Haven't quite gotten the idea through that it doesn't matter to me that others can leave their dogs without a bathroom break for 9 hours or more; we choose not to.

Re: What are you doing with your dog(s) for the holidays? [Poll]

For Thanksgiving we are leaving Amber home. We alternate whose side of the family we spend the holiday with each year, and this year we are going to be on LI at my sister in law's house, which is close enough that it won't be any longer than a work day really so she can handle it, even though it is not my first choice. I'll use her as the reason why we have to leave on the earlier side!

I WISH we could bring her but their dog hasn't been vaccinated yet (don't even get me started) so she can't be around other dogs...

Had we been going to CT to spend it with my family we probably would have brought her with us, since my aunt hosts and she has two giant field labs of her own and an acre of land for them to play in. Plus that would be too long of a day for her to be alone.

Christmas Eve we spend with my in laws, and Christmas Day with my family - and due to aging animals who live in both of those houses it would be too much to bring Amber either of those days (people, chaos and a young dog would be too much for the 18 year old cat/14 and a half year old dog, respectively). However, we are within 5 miles from our house in both instances, so we can go home to check on her!

I completely understand your feelings. I know Amber COULD go longer without a bathroom break that we really ever make her go. She is lucky that usually our schedules allow for one of us to stop home during lunch, or leave for work later in the morning/get home earlier in the evening, so she rarely HAS TO go a long time. It's actually more about her getting something to eat than holding it! --I don't want her to throw up from empty tummy.

Re: What are you doing with your dog(s) for the holidays? [Poll]

usually we go out to my parents house so they come with us. DH's fam is in NC so when we go there for the holidays they either come with us if my parents also go or they go to my parents house if my parents stay in NY.

but when we use to go to my grandmother's house for the jewish holidays they had to stay home alone cause my grandmother's building didnt allow pets.

and if we were to go to my aunts house then they would also have to stay home cause my aunt, cousin, and his FW are afraid of my dogs. Chat Icon

If we go to my parents house he always comes with us, no matter what.

If we are at my IL's house we leave him home since my niece is usually there and they all freak out about it (like he is a killer shih tzu or something Chat Icon ) but before going to my parents we will stop home and pick him up! This year he will probably not be with us for Thanksgiving but we will be us for Christmas eve and we do Christmas Day and my parents will bring their Yorkie to my house that day.

We usually bring our Yorkie to my moms house if we go there. She doesn't like animals in her house, but loves our Bella. She is okay with having her as long as she is gated off in another room when we are eating. My little cousins love playing with her.

This year we are at the ILs and we can not bring her. THey have two cats. One chases her and swats at her, the other she chases. They have asked us not to bring her. We will have a neighbor who will home checking on her.

CHristmas eve, we will be home all day- going out for dinner with friends, so she will only be alone a few hours.

Christmas day is at our house and she will be with us all day- even eating with us!

This year:

Thanksgiving - My mom, brother, and brother's GF are coming to us in CA...

Christmas - I'll be giving birth Chat Icon My mom will be coming out here again...

--

Usually we don't fly back to NY for Thanksgiving since it's too expensive to do both Thanksgiving and Christmas in NY...

So usually we are home for Thanksgiving and fly to NY for Christmas. We bring our dog with us for Christmas. Christmas Eve we spend with my DH's family, so our dog stays with my parents... Christmas day we spend with my family so our dog comes along.

--

It stinks that your family isn't more accommodating! My family is just DOG PEOPLE so over the summers, we have big BBQs and have had 9+ dogs in the backyard at my parents' pool!

When we go to my ILs for any holiday or even a dinner - Daisy comes with us! They expect it and want it!

When we host, we allow our family to bring dogs if they have them and want to bring them! Usually, only my ILs do.

Brutus comes with us for Thanksgiving at my ILs, and Christmas Eve with my parents.

Christmas Day is at DH's aunt and Brutus stays home since they have three BIG dogs already, but we pick him up right after dinner and bring him wherever we are headed!

I enjoy spending my holidays with him!

Re: What are you doing with your dog(s) for the holidays? [Poll]

When I lived in the same state - same town as my parents Sadler always came with me. Now that I'm OOS and have 2 more dogs, I leave them home if I'm going to my in-laws for dinner. My inlaws invite them but, I prefer to leave them home b/c I worry about the kids picking them up and pulling their tails and them just stressing b/c they are in an unfamiliar enviornment. We are usually only gone for a few hours so it's not that bad.

If I was going to be in town for Christmas this year I would be having it out our house just so I can be with my babies and that is why traveling this year is going to be very difficult.

Our pets stay home. I still don't know why my ILs don't want 3 horses in their backyard this Thanksgiving, though. Sounds perfect to me. Chat Icon

They have always invited us to bring our cats, though... but they have two dogs and I think our kitties would be MAJORLY stressed by a long trip to a strange place with a big dog.

We travel to NY with our dog Bella for the holidays and stay at my parents house. We usually do dinner/parties and my aunts house so Bella stays at my parents with their dog. I couldn't imagine bringing her to a party, she would go nuts with all the people....she would probably try to steal their food!! It's better she's at home. She and my parents dog have lots of fun together since they don't see each other too often.

Re: What are you doing with your dog(s) for the holidays? [Poll]

i wish everyone loved my dogs and wanted them around as much as I do.

Unfortunately there is not that many dog lovers in my family so the dogs will stay home for the holidays. We used to get away with bringing Murray to FIL's for breakfast xmas morning and FIL barely tolerated it but now with Diesel too, I dont see that happening this year.

IMO - If your sister , knowing how you feel, wanted Brinkley there, then you wouldnt have to ask her , she would offer. KWIM?

On a side note - i used to get really annoyed at my mom b/c in the summer I spend a lot of time there in her pool, backyard, bbq's and I would always ask her if I can bring murray 1. he can stay outside with us 2. i will pick up any poop and 3. the dog doesnt even shed for pete's sake! but she always says no. Thanksgiving we are going to my Aunt's- Katie will stay home.
Christmas we are going to my parents, Katie will come with us like she does every time we go there. It's going to be interesting having a baby this year and both of them have carseats.

Re: What are you doing with your dog(s) for the holidays? [Poll]

I know this is a huge issue in my family. My Uncle likes to bring his two dogs everywhere. This is fine in the summer when it is an outside get together, but big family events are crazy enough. Especially when the host has a dog also. There are just so many ppl and it makes it too crazy. I know ppl want to have their pets around but sometimes it is not the best thing for the pet either.
You have to worry about ppl giving them table food they are not use to which could make them sick. Or they could get into small toys, or ornaments, etc.. The noise, amount of ppl, could also cause stress to them.

I couldn't agree with this more...we leave Misty AND Espresso home at holiday GTG's. I see no reason to bring my animals to someone elses house...there's too much of a risk of something going awry AND I'm going to have to keep extra watch on my animals and not be able to relax and enjoy myself.
We celebrate Christmas with the animals in the morning before we go anywhere and Thanksgiving they get a little food treat when we get home.
As was said in the beginning-it's just another day for them, they have no idea it's a holiday.

ETA: I have to say I am surprised by how many people bring their animals with them. I would think it was so much better to leave them home where I know they are safe and not disruptive.

I said other because I have 2 responses.

Thanksgiving we are going to my parents house in SI for 12PM and we are leaving the puppy girls home.

For Christmas we are traveling 8 hrs to his parents house and we are taking them with us. Dinner is at his parents so we will have our 2 plus his parents doggie.

Re: What are you doing with your dog(s) for the holidays? [Poll]

i chose other

for thanksgiving this year, hershey will just stay home since we are having dinner at DH's aunts house around 2 and wont be home any later than 7

for christmas, we dont know what were doing yet... we go to my gma's house xmas eve and then around 11pm we go to DH's aunts house for a late late snack & DH's aunts and uncles exchange presents (its a family tradition that they do it at 11pm lol) then we usually spend the night at IL's house along with DH's 3 cousins, aunt, uncle, BIL and BIL's FW -- then xmas day is spent at IL's house

i dont know what to do... if DH's aunt lets us bring hershey to her house, then we will bring him to my gmas and then to his aunts and then to IL's

if she says NO about bringing hershey, then we will just leave him home while we're at my gmas and not go to his aunts house this year and just sleep at home
