Re: Traveling with gifts?

Last time I traveled with a wrapped present domestically the TSA agent made me unwrap it before it went into the scanner.

Re: Traveling with gifts?

We have been talking about this on my Americans in the UK forum recently, bring the presents wrapped, that should be okay, but we all say be prepared to unwrap them at customs should you need to. But in general, she should be okay bringing wrapped presents through customs.

Re: Traveling with gifts?

When I traveled with gifts I put them in gift bags so they can look in them I was glad I did because they pulled my bags and checked them, they TSA agent said it was a very good idea to do that when they are wrapped they have to unwrap them.

I would bring them unwrapped, that's what I have done going both ways.

Re: Traveling with gifts?

I fly with wrapped gifts for my nieces and nephews all the time and have never had a problem, but this time I think I might just wrap the gifts when I get there.

Re: Traveling with gifts?

If you are putting it underneath in baggage it should be fine. If you are bringing it on the plane they might ask you to unwrap it. I was going to a baby shower a few years ago and I had a wrapped mobile in my carry on. Not only did they unwrap it but they took the whole thing out and apart because they kept insisting I had scissors in there. When I got to my destination I had to get more wrapping paper and do it all over again.

Re: Traveling with gifts?

Even in checked luggage, I always keep my gifts unwrapped and wrap them when I get there...just in case.

this has been my experience as well. there's always a chance, but it's been rare for me. with the x-ray baggage check, they can still what's in there even though it's wrapped! Chat Icon

unwrapped - I had the TSA unwrap some of my gifts a few years ago.

Now with charging for baggage, a better way would be to ship the gifts first.

ETA: I also used to buy online and have it mailed to ILs house. And if local stores allow, you can order on the computer and pick up when you get there.

Re: Traveling with gifts?

I would tell her to keep them unwrapped. It's not worth the hassle of dealing with having to unwrap at the airport or having TSA unwrap them. Airlines and the TSA all recommend not wrapping gifts that are in your luggage.
