Re: what to wear to the opera?

I would think wedding type dress...only because I always think of the opera as being a very formal event.

ETS: Have a nice time

Re: what to wear to the opera?

I would go with a simple cocktail dress. Opera is the place to look fabulously formal, or formal but fabulous, however you want to put it! Enjoy!!Chat Icon

What performance are you going to?

Re: what to wear to the opera?

Because it is in the afternoon you can wear a cocktail dress. If it was in the evening, I would wear a floor length gown.

Re: what to wear to the opera?

i used to work for the opera, people only wear formal attire for opening night galas. i would go with the pants suit, esp since its an afternoon performance. have fun!

another tip, i always liked to read the full synopsis online before i saw a performance. that way you know the basic storyline and can focus more on the music and not on the translations.

I've been to the Met several times, and while I expected formal wear, many people wore jeans. I would dress nice- like what you would wear to a holiday party- but nothing too dressy.

Sadly, people will wear jeans to almost any event now.

Since it's an afternoon show, I would say dressy casual but nothing too formal. A cocktail dress, as some suggested, would be nice too.

ITA! I went to my first Opera last yr and went in a cocktail dress. I felt so overdressed!!!! So many people had on jeans, khakis, etc.

I would still wear thoufh a nice cocktail dress, especially since you are going with work colleagues

When I went I wore black pants, heels and a very sparkly dress flowy shirt - my dad wore a suit. We looked completely over dressed and ridiculous. I know you are supposed to feel fabulous when you are dressed better than everyone but I just felt like I missed the memo.

If you are one of those people that can pull it off - I say go all out!
