Are all cardio exercises created the same?
Okay so are all cardio exercises effective?
I know a lot is based on intensity...
but is running better than going fast w a lot of resistance on the elliptical?
the stepper?
the rowing machine?
an aerobis class?
What is the best workout? Do you achieve the best results?
Please weight in

Re: Are all cardio exercises created the same?
My trainer said aerobic exercise where you use your legs (running) burns way more calories than aerobic exercise using your arms (rowing).
For me personally, I don't ever get the same intensity of workout from other aerobics as I get from running.
I never "feel" like I get the same intensity of work out on the elliptical or the stepper.
I also think running helps strengthen abs while the others don't.

Re: Are all cardio exercises created the same?
I personally like running the best and think it slims and tones a lot but anything that gets your heart rate up is good and you have to do it for at least 45 minutes, 3x per week or more.
If I get bored of running I will do elliptical or stair climber or a spin class. The recumbent bike doesnt do much if you ask me. I try to get my heart rate up to 150-160 in order to get a good burn!

for me - nothing comes close to running
and personally I used to think running outside was better
but now that I went back to the gym- running intervals is kicking my butt
and reshaping it

If you are going to use the machines at the gym, exercise bike, treadmill or stairmaster is better than the elliptical. With the elliptical there is a lot of momentum involved, and your body doenst have to work as hard.

I think running takes off weight fast and it shapes your legs as well.

Put it on level 13...you will see a difference. I can definitely get a good workout on there. The difference is it's up to you to challenge yourself...same as if you were going to run intervals on the mill...you have to change that speed/incline.

Re: Are all cardio exercises created the same?
i do the elliptical only as i have a knee problem
if you increase incline and resistance...trust me you will get results. i have lost in this past year 45 pounds doing elliptical training and weight training.
its all up to you to vary the workouts and intensity imo. :)

you can do fartleks outside. I think they are a lot more fun than intervals on the track or TM. Pick a tree/corner/whatever far ahead and pick up the pace until you get there - pick something again for recovery.

AND... studies have shown that running/cardio with short bursts of giving it your all, ie sprinting, burns more calories!!! Thats why most cardio classes have about a 3-5 minute span of high intensity followed by a recovery time.. it burns more calories during, and it continues to burn calories after.. as opposed to a long distance run.. This is what I have read!!!!

Re: Are all cardio exercises created the same?
Well I went to the gym this am and ran for a bit. I have to build up bc I have NEVER ran . I was always more of a kickbox, step, spin kinda grl but since I have started going early am, there are NO classes at that time, so running it is.
Boy, it IS hard but I know it will get better as I get used to it...thanks girls

You should try to do the Couch to 5k program. It takes you from walking/running intervals to running for 30 minutes straight in 9 weeks.
There is a thread on here with more details
