Is the HSG test

as bad as it sounds. I am nervous about it. I haven't scheduled it yet but it sounds painful. Any advice.

Thanks

Re: Is the HSG test

It's not the most comfortable thing in the world, but it's quick. For me, it was just like bad cramps. Just take motrin before and that should help.

Don't stress about it. Chat Icon

Re: Is the HSG test

Truthfully its is sort of painful but its over pretty quickly. Don't forget to take motrin before hand. I had no cramping after it was over.

Honestly, it wasnt that bad for me. I took a motrin before hand and I was okay. I think I just expected it to be worse than it really was... Good luck!

The procedure itself was nothing.

I cramped really badly afterwards (despite taking ibuprofen.

You'll survive. Don't get too worked up about it... but do have someone able to take you home just in case.

I looked it up. Thank you. I am going to try and not think about it. I guess I have to do it.

Re: Is the HSG test

When I took the test it was definitely not comfortable and I cramped for a little while after, but the worst part was the test itself for me and the wait. I guess if you prepare yourself mentally enough and definitely take ibuprofin you'll be ok. Keep us posted. My friend took me out for wine and pizza and then I took a long nap. By the time I woke up it's like it never happened.

I was very nervous about it also. For me it was completely painless... a little uncomfortable but really no big deal at all. GL

Re: Is the HSG test

had heard really bad things about it, but mine was just a little uncomfortable and I had some cramping after it. Make sure you take Advil before you go (they will tell you to do so and how much to take), then go home and rest with your feet up (I had to get on a plane right after mine and it was awful!).

Don't stress about it...it sounds worse than it is.

Re: Is the HSG test

I agree with the others I took advil before I went and it was crampy for a few minutes. I went alone and was fine. It's best to try and relax as best you can! Good Luck!Chat Icon

Everyone's experience is different (as you can see from reading the posts) - I'm not going to lie, I was very very uncomfortable during the test - not when the catheter was inserted, but when the balloon was inflated. But then I didn't have any cramping afterwards.

Definitely take Advil or Motrin beforehand to help ease the pain. The nurse was very good in putting me at east before the procedure, and the dr talked to me the whole time he was down there - the best thing was getting to see the xray afterwards, i thought it was pretty cool to see the whole thing!

Even if it does feel uncomfortable, it really is a very quick procedure, and as soon as the balloon is deflated, the pain goes away.

Re: Is the HSG test

I personally found it more emotionally difficult than physically difficult. Physically, it was a little uncomfortable but didnt really hurt, and its over pretty quickly. Maybe it was just the room I was in, with these ridiculously bright flourescent lights, I just felt more exposed than at any gyn or IF appointment.

Good luck!

Re: Is the HSG test

Not going to lie. It hurt a lot. To the point where I would only do it again under sedation.

I have crohns too so my lower abdomen is always a bit sore so that definitely could have contributed to my pain.

I was completely fine after..a few hours later it was like it never happened.

eta: my cousin had absolutely no pain with hers. Go figure.

Re: Is the HSG test

Ill be honest... for me it hurt. The good thing is its quick. For me, it only hurt when he blew up and deflated the small balloon they use to keep the liquid in your uterus. Those times were quite painful, but I did not have any cramping after it was over.
