Hypoactive Thyroid??
I went for my annual physical yesterday afternoon and my doctor said that my Thyroid felt enlarged. He suspects that I have a hypoactive thyroid.
He took a blood test to determine whether it is hypoactive but I won't know those results till Monday. (I hate waiting) He also referred me for a thyroid sonogram to find out what the cause of enlargement is (hopefully it's nothing...)
Well it turns out that hypothyroid is often responsible for unexplained weight gain (try gaining over 15 lbs in the past 12 months!), fatigue (I am always tired) and.... INFERTILITY!! I never knew that!
I don't know if my thyroid is really the cause or our repro issues but I feel kind of relieved thar I might finally have an answer as to what is going on.
Does anyone know how a hypoactive thyroid effects reproduction? Other than low progesterone (on 2 occasions), I have had no other known imbalances/deficits.

Re: Hypoactive Thyroid??
I believe it messes with your ovulation. My friend had a hyperactive thyroid and I know that it caused her to have inovulatory cycles. The good news is that hypo is a very easy to control. Good luck - maybe this was the missing link for yoU!

Re: Hypoactive Thyroid??
I have hypothyroid and was dx through my RE....I am currently on the generic version of Synthroid ( my dose has been raised throughout the years, and my thyroid levels are now under control) Unfortunately for me, it did not help with my weight gain or my IF issues however I do know that it is known to interfere with both...Hypothyroid is pretty common and the meds are very easy to take ...Good Luck !!!!

Re: Hypoactive Thyroid??
I have what is called hashimoto's thyroiditis; it is , in essence and underactive thyroid
except for when i was on BCP, I NEVER had a regular cycle; my periods were sporadic and unpredictable I dont eat much, but have trouble losing weight, im always cold
your thyroid controls almost everything in your body and since it produces or does not produce hormones, there are many things that can be affected by it
I take metformin which has helped me to ovulate and regulate my cycles I also take 200 mcg of synthroid
i started on 75mcg in 2002 but it gets increased ALL the time. Also, the generic doesnt work for me, there actually is a difference in the coating and studies have been done on the generic vs. Synthroid
I am here if you have any questions! Good luck
Oh, and I took Clomid to conceive my DS; and I am on my 2nd round of Clomid now trying for #2

Re: Hypoactive Thyroid??
Me too, Hypothyroidism. Was diagnosed right after I had my m/c 2 1/2 years ago. You will be on meds forever. But, they are tiny little pills. However, for me, AF and Ovulation were always regular. Though now I am having a really really hard time loosing the 15lbs I gained the last 3 years. It can cause a m/c. Though no RE has ever said that is caused mine. You will really need to find an endocrinologist to monitor you forever. Plus once (being very positive here) you get pregnant you will need to be monitor for any changes in thyroid and they will adjust your meds accordingly. I'm surprised your RE didn't test your thyroid. That is one of the first things they do with the b/w.
Keep us posted.
