I am stunned....contractor related.

Has anyone ever received a letter from a contractor that you didn't choose, telling you he was upset that he didn't get the job, etc?

Is he trying to keep contact in case you have other work in the future? What was the tone of the letter?

i was just going to ask that.

was it more along the lines of..

"i'm sorry to hear that you've decided to use another company for your home renovations, etc.....I would be happy to assist you in any future work you may be considering.....etc..etc.."

Here's the backround:

This contractor doesn't work for the entire month of August...not him or his crew. He also has a policy that he doesn't start work until all materials are on site.

Well, because I am due with our first child at the end of July, I can't really take the risk of him not being there for an entire month (we are doing a master bathroom and remodeling a bedroom for a nursery. Now, I have things on order : cabinets, etc. that will take 6-8 weeks to get here...if things get delayed, I don't want to worry about the bathroom being finished before August.

So...we explained that these were the two primary reasons for not choosing him....that we need someone to start immediately, and have the place gutted, electric running, sheetrocked, etc...so that by the time materials start trickling in, (tile takes 2 weeks, mosiacs take 3 weeks), he will be prepared and can just put them in.

So...the letter I received states that he feels he's getting the "raw end of the deal"....that he could accomodate us by working before materials are there (BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT HE TOLD US)....
and he is upset.....if we can "Trust him" that our bathroom will be done in time, then he'd love to work with us (nevermind the fact that we told him we went with another).

I'm so angry at this letter....I called him and have yet received a call back.

No, but I had one CAC contractor call me 5 times since we first got the bid from him in November... sorry buddy... we moved quick, we told you that, we had it installed by Dec 1. He finally stopped calling.

IMO a letter "begging" for business looks bad. I would wonder why he needs my business so much and wouldn't be inclined to hire him.

There are good contractors out there who are still swamped with work.

ETA: My FIL is a kitchen designer and his main installer does not start work until all materials are delivered on site. It actually makes the job go so much faster for them and for you. Many contractors will start ripping it up, make you pay them 1/3 and then leave you hanging the additional weeks until cabinets etc. are in. That's why it often takes months for some people to get their kitchens/bathrooms done when the majority of that time it's waiting for materials but in the meantime you don't have a kitchen or bathroom or whatever room. So I'd have to defend him on that point

I'm surprised he takes off the entire month of August. That's the time when a lot of people prefer to have their kitchen done because they can barbecueChat Icon That's weird to me. My FIL's installer takes off around Thanksgiving and X-mas because no one wants their house a mess for the holidays.

On the other note, it does sound like he's kinds begging for the job.Chat Icon

I think that kind of letter is very unprofessional and I would be happy that i didnt choose him. It is so hard to find good, reliable contractors and you can't just take their word for it that they will be finished on time. I think I would just throw the letter, and his contact information, in the trash!!!!

Extremely unprofessional. It's a good thing you didn't pick him because you never know what kind of crapola he'd pull during the job if he could write a letter like that.

COMPLETELY unprofessional to say the least!! Chat Icon

I probably would have called him as well, although i don't quite know what I would say - other then to tell him that if he makes it a habit of sending out these "raw end of the deal" post-rejection letters, then maybe he needs to re-evaluate the way he conducts his "business"....Chat Icon

I would question a contractor that takes the entire month of August off - summer is generally the busiest season for them. I would not bother calling him back. You explained why you didn't use him, and went with someone else. End of story.

And, if he is being this much of a PITA before you even work with him, I can't imagine what he's be like once he is working.

Re: I am stunned....contractor related.

I cannot believe that he told you that he felt like he was getting "the raw end of the deal" That is extremely obnoxious, he should have been upfront with you with when he would be able to start (before or after materials arrived) and so on rather than trying to backpedal for a sale. Why in the world would he ever think that you care how he feels in the first place? Chat Icon Chat Icon

On a similar note, we had a contractor bid on a job and I stressed to him that time was of the essence. He told me he would have an estimate to me with in a week. Well after almost three weeks and many phone calls I told him that i needed the estimate that nighgt if we were going to consider him because I had another contractor waiting for a decision. He called me back and told me he he was mad because he didnt know i was looking at other contractors and he was wasting his time on the estimate. Other people I know that used him had rave reviews but I still had to go with the other contractor after that!

Just like there is Doctoroogle Tripadviser and Zagat, I think that there should be a whole website dedicated to posting reviews of contractors.

He's an idiot. What contractor doesn't assume that others will be bidding for the same job?

Actuallly, I have heard that there are customers out there who don't shop around bids. They just call one and go with it... no references, nothing. IMO it's very foolish.

You can ask them for their license number and insurance.... if they are legit they must have both. Then you can call the county and ask if there have been any compaints against that contractor.

I have called a mason and 2 landscapers and none of them have called me back! I actually made an appointment with the mason for an estimate and they never showed up! What is wrong with people? Do they not need the business? They just lost over $4,000 to someone else!!!

That's the problem my friends are having with selecting a contractor. Half of them have shown up, taken notes, then never get back to them with the quote.

Plus I think it si in poor taste for any professional to judge your choice for any reason.
