neuter price
I am taking my 8 month old lab to be neutered on Thursday and the vet said it will be anywhere from $320-490 depending on what meds he will need. Does that sound high or is that a "normal" price?

Re: neuter price
How many pounds is he? That's how they determine base cost. We paid close to $400 but our Lab was 58 pounds at the time.
I think the meds they mean is the anesthesia. Brinkley got 2 doses during the procedure. I also paid for a set of x-rays on his hips to make sure he wasn't prone to Hip Dysplasia, so your figure sounds about right on the low end. They also probably overestimate so if it comes in less, you'll be good.
I'll check my paperwork tonight. Ours was done at Hauppauge Animal Hospital.

Re: neuter price
Cooper is 49lbs. I thought the price was ok but my DH can't believe it's that much. He wanted me to "shop around". I would much rather take him to our regular vet where I know he will be taken care of and trust them.

Re: neuter price
Yup, owning a dog is expensive, right? I thought about that too, trying to find a lower price. DH and I decided to stick with our vet because we felt safer with them.
Has your dog ever needed to wear a plastic cone before? Ours freaked out a little bit with it and it started to break apart after a few days. Which, if your Lab follows you as closely as ours does, kind of hurts when he would jab me in the back of my legs with it.
We finally got a Comfy Cone - it's a soft cone that fastens with velcro. He would eat with it on, sleep with it on, everything. I think they sell them at Petco now if you're interested.
Good luck with his surgery, I'm sure he'll be fine!

Re: neuter price
Check out friendsofanimals.org, they offer neuter certificates for a lot less. I had my first cat neutered with the certificate....also you never know, your vet might be one of the participating vets in the area.

Re: neuter price
We just had our 37 lab mix neutered and the procedure itself was 280ish plus anesteshia (sp?) and pain meds. The bill was 450 something and that included another skin test and other meds.
As for the cone we could not leave it on her. If she was standing she would stand in that position for awhile, she was PETRIFIED! The vet suggested we put one of our t-shirts on her and that worked for us.

Re: neuter price
I paid $95 at Kent Animal Shelter out east, they have a low cost spay/nueter clinic it was great it included the surgery, e-collar and medication for 4 days. He was such a champ too, he came out running to us. No issues or anything. Prior to that we got quotes from anywhere from $200-$600 bucks.

Re: neuter price
My vet's office gave us an "estimate" based on how much she is expected to weigh at the time - I believe it was $300 something - for under 40 lbs. I was pleasantly suprised - I thought it was going to be over $1000!
