Where to put the crate?

Winnie will be 8 weeks old when she comes to live with us - I have never had a puppy that was crated - Where should we put it?

We have an inline high ranch so it absolutely needs to be upstairs - but we have a tiny kitchen.. and I dont want her to be too far from us... TIA

I put mine right next to the door that leave and enter my home from.. I really believe thats why Lola loves it so much.. She goes in on her own.. The door is never ever shut anymore.. She probably loves it because she is right there when I walk in the door.. So thats where I suggest you keep it. Chat Icon if you can Chat Icon

That would put her in the diningroom - that may work - I really wanted to put her in our bedroom but I have a feeling she may be up alot at night Chat Icon

rocco 's crate is in the bedroom but he is never lock on his crate he just go there when he is tired at night and I leave the door always open. Also the crate is more like his security space but he cry everytime I close the door.

Well since he is only eight weeks old you might have to wake up for the first month throughout the night to let him relieve himself until he can hold it.. I took my dog out every 3 hours when I first got her. Thats how I am proud to say she is 100% house broken.. has NEVER EVER HAD AN ACCIDENT.. The trick is to carry them from the crate to the poop place.. do not let them walk out of the cage.. always pick him up and take him right to the grass.. HTH Chat Icon

Re: Where to put the crate?

I've never had a puppy that young, but I'm under the impression that you will definitely have the sleepless nights like Diana said... Because the puppy is scared that it's not with it's littermates and mom anymore, and because it will have to relieve itself. I've read for average sized dogs that they can hold their pee for one hour per month. So in your case, 2 hours. Chat Icon

I just read this in a thread in Relationships, maybe the idea will help:

"I wouldn't let our puppy sleep in our room. She slept in her crate outside the door for about 2 weeks.... then we moved her crate to the living room and we slept on an air mattress in the living room with her for a week.... then we went back up to our room and left her down in the livinging room in her crate. She sleeps 8-9 hour nights with no whining. Someone told us this method and it's worked great for us. I didn't want to get her in the habit of sleeping in our room, eespecially if we have a child one day and I'd have a bassinet in the room. IMO she needs her space and we need ours!"

I hope this helps! You'll have to weigh the puppy feeling more secure with you against how much sleep you can lose! Chat Icon

In all seriousness, is there any way you or DH could take a couple of days off? We did that with Brinkley, to ease the transition, and will do it again in January when we get our second.

Re: Where to put the crate?

I have mine in the living room where Maggie can see me when I walk in the door... I also put it there because it does not get direct sun from any of the windows - didn't want her becoming overheated or blind! I would be midful of radiators now that people are turning them on as well.
