My mother was very candid with me today
She sat me down and told me she wanted to tell me something.
She proceeded to tell me how she suffered from post-partum depression after having me, could not eat anything, and lost 40 pounds in the two weeks after I was born. The doctor put her on anti-depressants. She just wanted me to be prepared just in case I felt out of sorts after having the baby and that I must tell someone if I don't feel right.
She was so cute cause she kept saying "I was so thrilled to have you, I never felt anything else, but I was just so overwhelmed" I told her of course I know that - she tells me constantly what a wonderful gift I have been to her. Just the fact that I was born by emergency c-section - and it took a lot to recover from that. Her body and hormones were all out of wack. My mother is the type of person that just delas with things so I'm proud that she expressed her concern to the doctor - she was obviosuly thinking of how it would affect her ability to take care of me.
Now I'm wondering if postpartum depression is hereditary in any way. I have suffered bouts of depression but have never been on medication or been to a psychologist. I think I'm going to bring it up to my Dr. at the next visit.
My goodness women go through so freaking much in life....

I think she was afraid/embarassed to tell me, like I'd think less of her.
I just think she's even stronger !!!!

That is an amazing gift that she gave you..what a nice moment to share with your mom. Yes, you could be at higher risk for PPD, but of course, it doesn't mean you will have it. Just know that if something is going on that you have someone to talk to, who understands. My mom told me AFTER I had nearly a year of PPD that she had it after my brother. I felt very alone for a long time. Maybe if I had know I would not have felt so weak and alone.

Wow - what a great mom you've got!
I think with your and your mom's history, your radar should be on PP. Make sure you take good care of yourself and have some help PP (don't be wonder woman).
I think men go through some things too, even though much less than us - but society doesn't let them express it! I'm pretty sure my brothers had PP depression and felt pretty helpless/useless, as strange as that sounds. They admit they could never be a woman, they're too weak!

I agree, you have an amazing mother. Now you have it on your radar and so will your mom. It's great that your mom can help you through it if you do get PPD. However, I hope you do not get it.
