Dogs with seasonal allergies

Last year we noticed Yogi scratching a lot so we took him to the vet. Vet said he has seasonal allergies. He told us to give him benadryl. It made me nervous to give him "people" medication so we didnt give him anything and the scratching stopped. Well, it seems to have started again this season. Has anyone given their dog Benadryl?

Re: Dogs with seasonal allergies

Our vet recommended it as well - a half tablet once a day or a whole one at night if the scratching is keeping her or us up. My dog is just under 60 lbs.

My parents' vet recommended it for their dog as a sedative of sorts - he is really old and gets worked up when they have company then can barely walk the next day. They also said it can help keep his cancer from coming back (he had two tumors removed over his life) because it slows the mast cell growth.

So, we had no problem giving Amber benadryl. It works!

Do you give tablet or liquid? I looked for the liquid today in Target and they only had the children's brand. They had tablets but I didnt know if that was okay.

Re: Dogs with seasonal allergies

I was doing some reading online and pills seem to be better than the liquid bc of alcohol content in the liquid form.

ETA: We're going to the vet this week so we can ask questions then.

Re: Dogs with seasonal allergies

I give my Shih Tzu Benadryl. Just be sure od the dosage b/c I once gave him a little too much and it dried him out. He was hacking for a day or two and I thought he had kennel cough but, it was just from the benadryl.
