Has anyone been on an Alaskan cruise?

I'm trying to plan a trip for next year but am overwhelmed with all the choices.

Holland America seems to be the favorite.

Re: Has anyone been on an Alaskan cruise?

I did on Norweigian a few years ago. I chose the itinerary because I wanted to depart/arrive in Seattle.

It was a GREAT trip!

What month did you go?

I wanted to do May but I'm afraid it will be too cold. I guess we can just go in June or July.

Went at the end of May. It was high 60s/low 70s for most of the trip, pretty perfect, IMO. It was amusing.. one day it hit like 74 and everyone ran to get their swimsuits and go in the pool! As if that was warm and tropical Chat Icon

High 60s/low 70's sounds perfect. I was under the impression it got much colder than that.

Were all the shops open for business?

I read that May was shoulder season and you may not be able to do all the excursions because they are not open for business.

I particularly really want to do the dog sledding excursion.

Re: Has anyone been on an Alaskan cruise?

I took this cruise on Norweigian a year ago in July left from Seattle. We spent a night in Seattle and left in the am. It was was low 60s - too cold for the outside pool. We did the dog sled through the woods - not the helicopter in the snow dog sled option - it was great!

It's an amazing landscape - you'll have a great time

Which port did you do the dog sledding?

I THINK juneau is the only place? The cost for these excursions are ridiculous, like $500! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon We'll still do it since I doubt I'll have the opportunity to go dog sledding again anytime soon.

We did the sledding in juneau I know it was $$$ (it is a lot more for the snow dog sled ride) It was totally woth it IMO. Like you said it's something you probably will never have the opportunity to do again.

Re: Has anyone been on an Alaskan cruise?

We went on NCL in mid-May 2 years ago. It was defintely cold, and we didn't get to see a lot of cleaving of the glaciers in Glacier Bay because of the icing. If you can go later, I say go in June/July, but you'll still be amazed by the beauty in May!

The shops were all open, it was the second week that the ships were going up there.

It was okay weather in Juneau, maybe low 60s. Skagway was terrible, we had a blizzard, it was freezing. Ketchikan was beautiful, maybe low 70s. Victoria was our last stop and it was nice and warm there.

We didn't do the dog sledding. We did the helicopter onto Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, a bus ride into the Yukon and the White Pass Railway in Skagway, and the Misty Fjords in Ketchikan. The Misty Fjords is amazingly beautiful, I highly recommend it!

Thanks for the heads up on May weather. I was on the fence about going in a shoulder month. We could easily just go in June or July.

We went the end of May 3 years ago (Memorial Day weekend we left) and it was cold, but tolerable. Just too cold to be out on deck though.

Re: Has anyone been on an Alaskan cruise?

Ahh! I never took a cruise to Alaska but I have to comment about what I heard about Holland America.

From what I know, it's a cruise line that is very popular with senior citizens.... and because of that the ship goes to sleep early.. meaning, there aren't too many events going on late at night, and there's not a young crowd.

I don't want to get flamed for this in case someone has a different view Chat Icon But, this is something I heard from a person who has cruised A LOT and taken all the lines......

We sailed mid June on RCCL in 2005 and loved it. AMAZING trip. We actually did sit by the pool the last day. I want to say it was about 70 degrees

I don't know anything about Holland America really, but I think that is true of a lot of Alaska cruises in general. We went for my Dad's 60th birthday and my DH, me nad my sister brought down the average, by a LOT (I was 24, DH 25 and my sister 22).

Its not a bad thing, just what I observedChat Icon

Re: Has anyone been on an Alaskan cruise?

We went on NCL in July 2008 and the weather was basically 60s. We did two nights in Seattle before and then the cruise. As for excursions we did the dog sled through the woods (not the helicopter, my DH would not agree to it!), Mendenhall Glacier/whale watching tour, and the train ride/digging for gold adventure. We went with my parents, sister and her FH and it was a great trip. The only thing I dislike about NCL is the speciality restaurants; don't get me wrong, the food is delicious but if you want to eat at one of those restaurants you must pay (which kind of defeats the purpose of the cruise). We ended up eating at every speciality restaurant and the costs added up (of course we didn't have to eat there, but we weren't impressed by the food at the general restaurants). I had previously cruised Princess and I thought their quality of food at the general dining rooms was much better.
