Do you let your food cool before putting it in the fridge?
If your food is hot, do you let it sit out before putting it in the fridge?

Re: Do you let your food cool before putting it in the fridge?
yes
If I'm bringing leftovers for lunch the next day, I portion it out into tupperware while I'm plating the food for me and DH - by the time we're done eating, it's cool enough to put in the fridge.

Yes, I think bacteria can grow if you put it in hot.

Yes, but only its because I always visualize my bowl or the glass shelf exploding from the heat to cold contact. As soon as it has cooled a little I will put it in the fridge.

Not always. I know it's bad for the efficiency of the fridge but it takes a while for some things to cool and I dont always have the time to wait.

I do the same - it also helps us not to eat seconds!

Usually. I make whatever for dinner and by the time dinner's over its room temp and I pop it in the fridge.

Yes, but sometimes it is still warmer than room temperature.
I make sure it isn't still steaming though.

I thought bacteria grows at room temperature and that was why we are supposed to defrost meat in the fridge.

Re: Do you let your food cool before putting it in the fridge?
Yeah because I read about nasty bacteria if you don't. A couple of times I put something in the fridge hot and felt sick the next time I ate it.

Re: Do you let your food cool before putting it in the fridge?
I don't usually put anything hot in the fridge. If I need it cooled quickly I'll try to give it an ice bath before popping it in the fridge.
I am fairly certain bacteria won't grow on hot food that's put in the fridge. I think that thinking is a holdout from the days of less efficient refrigeration - it back then it would probably throw off the system and lead to quicker food spoilage.. but I don't think that's such an issue with our modern units. When I'm too lazy to prep an ice bath, I'll pop food in the fridge to take the scalding heat off dinner before serving to my sons.

Re: Do you let your food cool before putting it in the fridge?
I'm pretty sure its not bacteria that grows on the food that you just cooked - if you put hot food into the fridge, the food around it will start to warm up enough for bacteria to grow.
