Using your cell phone internationally esp. Italy

Okay so I called customer service TWICE and looked this up online and got three different answers. I rented an international phone from Verizon and I am going to Italy.

When I get to Italy, how do I call Italy? and how do I call the US?

I have been told to use the country code for both, NOT use the country code for either, use the + symbol and then dial the regular number - basically every combination possible!

Thanks for any and all help, I am getting nervous because I can't get stuck there without a phone!

My friend brought her regular cell phone to italy, the one she uses everyday here
And she said there were no codes needed, she used just like she was using an italian phone.

when we were on our honeymoon in europe we used our regular cellphones to dial back to the US. i think it was just dialing like normal..1+areacode+number.
however, we got hit over the head with the rates. (this is going back 5 years though.)

i hope the international phone has better rates!

The counry code for the US is 001, so just dial 001-516-555-1234

I brought my regular phone with me last year when we went to Italy and I remember having to dial the country and city codes when calling within Italy (for example, I had to dial +39 06 xxxxx everytime I called Rome). I figured it out by process of elimination..when it didn't work one way, I just tried another way .
