Anyone's DH have an aversion to breastfeeding

I'm leaning towards trying to breastfeed until I go back to work but for some reason DH is really against it. He hasn't given me any good reason why he feels this way other than the whole "whipping your boob out in public is nasty thing", which I would not do. We argue about it and I end up saying everytime that it's my body and my decision. Then I feel bad because it should be OUR decision.

Anyone else having this battle?

Actually, we're having the opposite problem; he wants me to but I don't want to.
It's your body though - do what you feel comfortable with. Your DH should have no aversions to breastfeeding - it's good for the baby, and all the work would be on you, not him!

Once my husband heard about the health benefits, both for the baby and for me he was sold.

I'm going to stop myself from saying what I'd really like in response to your husbands comment, as I know drama isn't welcome. I'll simply say that if you do breastfeed, you will end up breastfeeding in public, and you will not care in the least. If your baby is hungry, you will feed the baby. (And everyone around you will prefer you feeding your baby to hearing the baby screaming.)

Re: Anyone's DH have an aversion to breastfeeding

I also had the opposite issue. My DH was INSISTENT that I BF and I didn't want to. He went on and on about that's they're purpose and how healthy it is for the baby, etc., etc. It took a while, but I agreed to try it and I did it for a year! Some guys I know that are against it are jealous because they think that your "boobs" are theirs only and they don't want to share them. It might sound weird, but at least that's what they've told me anyway. I say if you want to, you're right it is your body and you want to provide for your child, so go for it. I also wanted to add that I NEVER BF in public, nor would I ever. I always found somewhere private to do that. I don't think it's wrong necessarily, but to me BF is a natural thing, but not that natural!!! If I was able to find somewhere EVERYTIME I needed to BF than so can they. JMO! You do what feels right for you! Good luck!

Maybe have the Dr explain to him all the benefits to the baby. Will that convince him you think?

IMO its your body so its your decision especially because breastmilk is best for the baby.
My DH was very pro breastfeeding and was extremely supportive when I had supply problems. We spent a lot of money to make sure my daughter had as much breastmilk as I could give her.
Maybe you could share some of the facts on how much better breastmilk is so that he can see the benefits.
Also there is not rule that says you have to breastfeed in front of other people. I always found a quiet place if we were out and about.

No, but my DH is completely fine with me deciding not to breastfeed. He said whatever i was more comfortable with and he believes whatever is best for mommy is best for baby.

Re: Anyone's DH have an aversion to breastfeeding

Maybe your DH is afraid that once your breasts become a source of nourishment for your child, they won't have the same sexual appeal and he is sad about that. It may be that he is coming to grips with the idea that you will be somebody's mom. He doesn't want to lose the way he views you now.

I am no pg but so far DH seems okay with the fact that I want to breast feed when we do get there.

Maybe your DH needs to realize that you can be motherly and sexy in the same body. Chat Icon

Holy Cow Stacey - I never knew you were bf'ing!!

I've been doing it for 6.5 mos now and only had to do it once in public - in the pedi's office because he was starving - I turned my chair around and threw my coat over my shoulders. No one knew.

Re: Anyone's DH have an aversion to breastfeeding

I have to agree with everyone here... maybe if you educate your DH on why BFing is so wonderful for your baby, he will change his mind..

When I told DH I wanted to BF, he was all for it- but he knew he didnt have a say in the matter... Its your body, and if you want to do this, its your decision!

There are MANY people who feel BFIng is wrong (my inlaws Chat Icon ) From what Ive been told.. "back in the day" only the poor people BF because they couldnt afford formula- so to the uneducated- BFing was a sign of poverty...HOW SOME PEOPLE ARE SO STUPID, boggles me!

I had alot of people up against me for choosing to BF- and unfortunately the eventually got the best of me, and I gave up around 2 months... - I couldnt regret it more! (not the anything happened when I stopped, but I really miss it!)

I say give it a try, and make the decision for yourself!

My DH didn't really have an opinion when I got pregnant with my first. He said he would support whatever decision I made. Which was good because if you are determined to BF, it may not be too easy in the begininng and you will need all the support you can get.

This time around, as we await our second child, he's the one asking me if my breast pump is ready, do I have my boppy, etc. He is very supportive and any fears or embarrassments he may have had over it totally disappeared. Not to mention how proud he is when he can say he never spent on dime on formula. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone's DH have an aversion to breastfeeding

When I was first PG, DH was kind of against me BFing because he felt that then they wouldn't be "available" for him. That if he wanted to touch them and stuff, that milk would start coming out and that grossed him out. Now that the baby is due soon, and I have just kept saying that I'm going to try to BF, he is fine with it, and he will just deal with whatever happens.

Thanks for the advice girls. I hope I didn't make my DH out to sound like an ignorant person, he's not. Alot of people, as some of you said, have an aversion to breast feeding, unfortunately he's one of them. But hey if I got him to stop using MY towel I can sure educate him and help him change his mind about this Chat Icon
