Need advice: dogs and moving
I have only moved 1x in my life with a dog and remember him getting really upset and getting sick once we got to the new house. We are moving next week, any advice on how to make the move a little less traumatic? He's a pretty sensitive little guy.

Re: Need advice: dogs and moving
Awwww poor little guy. Our dog was pretty upset when we moved 3 years ago but she adjusted fairly quickly but I think it was because we were home with her the first week or so every day and she wasn't left alone. Out of curiosity will you be taking any time off (if you work) after your move? I think that will help a lot if you are.
If not you may want to consider confining your dog to a smaller space at first to make him less anxious. After we went back to work, we put Petunia back in her Pen for a little bit to get her adjusted. She had a huge pen and we kept her in middle of the kitchen. I think that we kept her in it during the day for a few weeks and by that time she was fine. Good Luck on your move.

Well, we are moving on a weekend, so he will have 2 days with just us. He is crate trained, so we keep him there anyway when we are not home. I just don't want him to bug out too much.

In the Cesar Milan book, it says to take your dog for a long walk (I'd think a mile or more should do it) immediately upon arriving at the new house. That's supposed to simulate the action of the pack migrating, which is part of the dog's instincts, so they'll understand that you're going to be moving to a new territory. Haven't had the chance to try it out myself yet, but maybe that will help!

Yikes! That will have to be DH's job! I can barely walk from the car to my front door these days
