When are Amnios done?
Can they be done as early as 16 weeks? I thought I heard they are only done around 2-25 weeks???

They are usually done between 16-18 weeks.

They are done between 16 and 18 weeks b/c if g-dforbid something is wrong, depending on the parents decision, nothing can be done after the 20 week mark

I had one done at 18 weeks because of the false positive results of the AFP test...

Bedda26 - thats the path I'm on right now. I got a positive on an AFP this week and today am going for an more advanced sono to look closely at the baby's spine and then based on those results, will go for the amnio.
so you had a postive AFP and then all OK from then on?

I also had a positive AFP test. My baby also has a cyst which I knew about. They wanted me to have the amnio because of the cyst and the positive AFP. I got it done at 18 weeks and everything was fine. It's the waiting part that almost killed me. If you have any questions please free to ask.

Oh tell me about it! The waiting is the worse part. Did you have the F.I.S.H. test. Where you got results in 48 hours.

The waiting is by far the worst! I had to wait 10 days for my results - it was torture!!!

is the 20 week mark for NY? i thought it was 24 weeks (but i am in NJ)...

my doctor told me is was 24 weeks in NY. I didn't have the fish test done because the results are not as accurate as the amnio and I knew I was going to have the amnio done. I had to wait 2 weeks. The amnio does hurt but not as bad as you think it would.

Well I've heard that they are pretty accurate. About 98% accurate. Of course my doctor is very precautious she likes waiting for the 10 day results where she has it in writing that things are fine.
But when I was going through my ordeal with the amnio, many women including ones from the boards told me that they are pretty accurate.
I guess it all depends on our opinions...
