Hither hills state park in montauk - on the beach - you might have trouble getting a weekend site during the August, but you can def get something in september.

MY Dad always took us to Cedar Point in East Hampton. They have bathrooms, a beach, a lighthouse, a store, playground, etc, etc, etc. They do things like movie night on the lawn (or at least they did when we used to go). We always thought it was really nice. And it's not far from everything else out east.

We love this place! My parents have worked here for years. They have tons of childrens activities and firetruck rides twice per day!

Just got back from Cedar Point this weekend. Also suggest Indian head. Hither hills has NO trees so there is NO shade. A lot of people like Smiths Point also, but that again doesn't have a woodsy atmosphere. My brother goes there with his kids for the bay and ocean access. One year someone went around a stole eveyones coolers while they were sleeping. Kids from the 'mainland' come down and create issues.

Not so sure about this, people book HH a year in advance, maybe cancellations?
ETA-You can't do just a weekend either, they are for a week at a time.

It was many years ago, but we camped at Wildwood State Park on the north shore of Suffolk. Not sure exactly where it is but it was about an hour's drive from Levittown/Wantagh. I thought it was pretty nice and we were able to walk to the water.
