so YAYAY!!!! we have decided on a contractor and a date for our fireplace reopening!!!
we ended up going with Fluetech Inc (they are on the island as well as upstate and Jersey) and are very happy.
we've decided to go the full monty and do a Bellfire open woodburning fireplace instead of just installing the wood stove.
cost wise, it was only about $2k more to go this route, but it's less demo work on the existing structure (which I like) and it's "truer" to the age and character of my home, which is celebrating it's 209th bday this year. 
is IS setting us back just over $10k...but doing it this way gives us almost as much efficiency as a wood stove and should really allow us to offset our heating bill, which will be great.
the company, Fluetech, has been great to work with so far. the guys are very knowlegable and give straight up answers.
the project should take 2-4 days and I will try to take photos and let anyone interested know what it entails. the whole process is kinda cool actually.
we plan to have it done by the first day of fall...perfect timing for our first fire. and also, just a few short weeks before our  is due to arrive.
what a warm welcome our baby will receive.
