Before and after pics of our house
I feel a little uneasy about posting when we still have sooooo much more work to do to truly make our house perfect for us. Please keep in mind it is a work in progress and was horrible when we purchased it. We just moved in in January. Here goes...

Thank You! We moved from LI to Monroe, NY in January. I live 5 minutes from Woodbury Commons Outlets (very dangerous  ) and the commute to Manhattan for my DH is about an hour and ten minutes each way.
ETA: The lake is what sold us on this fixer upper. We always wanted to live on or near water. We kayak a lot and my DH loves to fish, Kayak, Canoe, surf, etc.
I wish it was on the ocean (I LOVE the beach), but the lake is beautiful.

Nope to Penn through NJ transit, even though we are in NY. DH takes the express from Harriman, then to Secaucus to transfer to Penn. He thought it would be really annoying but said it was not big deal at all.

OMG I am showing Monroe houses to my DH tonight! He can commute and maybe I can stay home and have some    ! Seriously though, are there jobs up there if you don't want to commute?

I work from home up here for a title company, so I might not be the best person to ask.
I am sure there are jobs up here if you look. They definitely will not pay as much as a job in Manhattan, but it is worth checking out.
That is why we moved. Monroe has great schools, low taxes, and I can work P/T from home once my is born because our mortgage is not HUGE. I do miss LI terribly (the beaches and my friends) but all of our family has moved off LI, so for us this move was a no brainer. Now, we are closer to family that live in NJ and upstate NY.

Thanks everyone. 
I am proud of what we did, but I feel like we will be working on this house for a long time. 
In the long run, I feel like we made a great investment and we can decorate it how we want.

DH wants to move off LI and has to go into the city to work. Tell me, what is there to do up there? Are there restaurants and movie theaters or is it more........ummmm........country? My parents have a house upstate and it is dead in any season besides summer.....

It is country but we have Woodbury commons, movies, restaurants, coffee house, etc. In all honesty, the same stuff that LI had with less crowds. DH & I go into Manhattan if we want a "night life". Hope that helps.

Tuxedo is beautiful, too! Check it out. I was an LI girl before moving up here and I love it! I do miss my friends, but my friends drive up to visit and I drive down to LI. It's no big deal.

I love your house & lake too. You have done a fantastic job. We chose to live further out in eastern suffolk on a lake to get away from the rat race. I love being in a more rural setting.
