How do you throw out leaves, branches, etc

I have a ton of branches to throw out. I put them in a bag and left it in front of the house.

Special pickup took all my garbage bags except for the bag that had branches in it.

If you trim a tree or have a bunch of branches to throw out... where/how do you do this? Does it just go out with the regular garbage?

I know by us, we have to cut the branches to a certain length and tie them up. We put them out with the leave collection pickup

Our grass, etc. bags are picked up on Wednesdays (separate from garbage and recycling pickups). We're in Seaford.

same here - we leave our lawn clippings out for the compost pickups on Tuesday. I think it's just the big branches, like tree cuttings that need to be cut down and bundled though.

We met the garbagemen and gave them $10 to take the bags of branches. We did a lot of meeting the garbagemen when we first moved in. Chat Icon

In our neighborhood they bundle and tie them up (they can't be any longer than 4 ft in length) or they stick them in an open can.

Pickup for leaves/sticks and such is only on a certain day too.

Thanks for the posts.

So do these just go out with the regular garbage? In Levittown... i get regular garbage picked up on Monday and Thursday mornings. Recycling is Friday mornings.

I don't know of another day for "tree" pickups.

Call your local town hall. They would be able to answer this type of question. For my parents, the leaves can get bagged, but the branches need to be wraped in twine and cut into 4 ft strips. Everything is picked up on trash day.

Our town (smithtown) gives us these green plastic bags to put leaves in. They said to tie up the branches NEATLY and put them by the curb on pick up days. Maybe you should call your town and see what their rules are. We always have a few extra bags that just "sit" because they're too heavy.

In our town the highway dept picks up and composts the leaves and branches so the leaves must be in these tall Kraft (paper) bags. I get them at Walmart, Home Depot, local nurseries, etc.

These are our rules from the town website:

Does the Highway Department pick up leaves?
Yes. Leaves that are in brown paper biodegradable bags will be picked up at curb side in the Spring starting the 3rd week of April - the 2nd week of June. In the Fall from Labor Day - Dec. 15th or the first snow fall, which ever comes first.

Does the Highway Department have a service for disposing of grass clippings?
No.

Does the Highway Department pick up tree limbs?
Yes. As a courtesy, the Highway picks up branches, tree limbs, and twigs no more than 4" in diameter that are in a manageable pile not more than 3 feet high, and five feet wide. The butts of the branches are to face the road. This service is not intended for homes being privately Landscaped.

Christmas trees will be picked up on the 2nd and 3rd week of January each year, weather permitting.

In Levittown - grass, lawn, tree pick-up is Weds. We put ours in those large black garbage bag and they always take them on Weds.
