Re: There just has to be an answer out there...
Posted by colesmom Mather Hospital has a very good psych. program. The best part about it is that they separate the juveniles from the adults. There are actually (especially true for the juvenile unit) more drug addicted patients than emotionally disabled patients. It is a locked unit and they can't "check themselves out". After hospitalization (usually around 10 days) they have a "partial hospitalization" day program for about 12 weeks. Their follow up is very good. They'll assign a social worker and help set up tutoring.
What school district is he in? I'm sorry you're going through this. I've been through it all with my brother. You can FM me for details if you'd like.
WOW that is EXCELLENT!!! And i think Mather is on the close side for Marissa!

Re: There just has to be an answer out there...
Your brother sounds a lot like my BIL. He's 19, and has been in jail for sixty days for stealing beer and a credit card to buy the beer, and now he is in some court-mandated drug treatment program in Happauge, in the state office complex. (He smokes pot).
The awful thing is my MIL TRIED EVERYTHING before things escalated. He was going to counseling (but would just sit there and not talk), she begged his school to help (Kings Park SD), called the police for help, all to no avail b/c at the time he hadn't done anything illegal - he was just skipping school, hanging out with the wrong crowd, come home really late, and the pot-smoking she suspected but never caught him doing it or with it until later, when things escalated.
Your mom should definitely file a police report. Show the police the device she found in his room. Call the kid on everything he does - if she hides it, she's not helping him. Call the police if/when he is violent. Make him see there are consequences.
And, honestly, I would kick him out and change the locks to the house unless he agrees to co-operate and live by the rules.
ETA: Be very careful about calling something a suicide attempt if it's not. My brother DID attempt suicide and it's a crime. Yes, they handcuffed him while they pumped his stomach. And it's on the record, and eliminates many jobs that require a stable psych background (like law enforcement).

Re: There just has to be an answer out there...
I feel so sorry for your mom I know of a couple that has a daughter who was out of control like your brother. Into everything, not going to school, coming and going as she pleased and was a minor to boot. After trying everything they could think of, they petitioned the court and signed over their parental rights to them. They placed her in a supervised facility (she didn't have a choice of whether she wanted to stay or not, the court made her) and they helped her get back on track. She is now in the Army and doing very well. This, I know, is a drastic step to take, but, one that may need to be taken. It can be presented to your brother as an alternative. If he doesn't stay in a drug treatment facility as long as needed and straighten up his act, then this is the next step. Your brother's actions affects the entire family and your parents should not have to live under these conditions. I wish them the best of luck and hope everything works out.
