Buenos Aires/Argentina or Japan?
I know these are different as can be, but DH and I both want to visit these locations (I'm leaning towards BA and he is leaning towards Japan).
I would really like to go to Japan, but I think our kids might enjoy it more when they get older (2 and 4 right now - maybe at 10 and 12?), so I think delaying it is the better idea.
but for BA (I would also like to go to Patagonia) we would leave the kids home no matter what...LOL

would preschoolers like Japan? or better to bring them when they get older?
and it doesn't help that we watch I survived a Japanese gameshow and see all the cool places they get to go.

I went to Japan fro my first anniversary and loved it! I've never been to BA, so I am no help. I have a Japan review thread on here somewhere.

I dunno if they would like either place really, but Japan is full of Cartoon Characters, so they might like it. And in Tokyo there is a Disneyland not too far outside of the city, maybe an hour by train, so thats always good for little ones.

I voted Argentina. A few days exploring Buenos Aires, and the rest of the time in Patagonia.

I've not been to either, but I think Japan would be way more interesting for kids (and adults too!).

Re: Buenos Aires/Argentina or Japan?
You're killing me! In the past year, Ive been to both and I honestly can't decide for you, they were both so amazing.
Went to Japan in Sept '08. (my second time in Tokyo) Did the bullet trains all around, went to Japanese baseball games, stayed in Tokyo and Osaka (also visited Kyoto and Hiroshima) . I can't WAIT to have kids that are around 10/12, like you said to do it all over again with them. Very family friendly, especially with Tokyo Disney, baseball games, and tons of different kinds of food.
Went to BA, Argentina this past May. I absolutely LOVED it. VERY cheap... some of the best food/wine I've ever had. It was definitely more of a couples place though. It was romantic but frantic and crazy. I think a kid could get bored there, not a ton to see and do.
I liked Japan a BIT more than Argentina.... but for your description, Id go to Argentina now and wait for the kids for Japan.
