La Jolla or Coronado CA

We are going to San Diego in Sept will be there 3 days -- just wondering if anyone has been to La Jolla or Coronado. I've found hotels in both places and I am wondering which is better or rather which place you preferred

TIA

Re: La Jolla or Coronado CA

Coronado is very nice, but across the bridge from downtown San Diego. It's a whole little residential community, and the beach is right there.

La Jolla is north of downtown, but more city-like than Coronado. There will be shops and restaurants within walking distance, etc. There's a more dramatic landscape with the cliffs, but it's also close to the beach.

So both would be nice places to stay, but it depends on what you're looking for.

Re: La Jolla or Coronado CA

we just came back from san diego about two weeks ago. We stayed at the sophia hotel which was the perfect location in downtown san diego. We were walking distance to seaport village and the gas lamp district. We also rented a car and went to la jolla (about 20 minutes away) to do some kayaking. we didnt go to coronado but it was only a ferry boat away. Hope that helps! FM me if you want to know anything else!

I used to live in La Jolla and will say it all depends on where you are staying. If you are staying in the heart of La Jolla or on the outskirts...I would pick Coronado over the outskirts.

will you have a car...beware that parking is a premium in SD. You could probably walk most of the downtown areas of SD if you stayed on Coronado (i'm pretty sure there's a ferry) - you would not be able to get to downtown easily without a car from La Jolla...and then pay for parking if you wanted to go downtown/gaslamp. or you can park in Old Towne and take the trolley down.

so - to really answer, I need to know if you will have a car? where is the La Jolla hotel (also - the hotel is definitely Coronado and NOT imperial beach, right?)? what do you want to see/do there (most attractions - zoo, balboa park, gaslamp) are downtown.

Thanks for the info -- I just took a look at the sophia hotel -- it looks nice and reasonably priced. Friends had recommended la jolla and coronado area but this place looks good to me!

I absolutely LOVED the sophia hotel. The rooms were on the smaller side but they were CLEAN (spotless), and exceptional service. We both really enjoyed our stay there! Especially since it was located near everything!!! Good luck!
