Please tell me about Naples, Italy
Putting our trip plans together for September.
Is Naples worth a stop? A few nights?
If we stay there for a bit, are there day trips to other small cities to visit?
All I know is that the hotels were significantly cheaper than Rome and the guidebooks say it's hectic.
TIA!

Re: Please tell me about Naples, Italy
I hate to say it (because I have family there and descend from there!) but from what I know Naples itself is a bit run down and not so safe. However, the surrounding areas are amazing. You can see Mount Vesuvius, visit Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri, etc. I love, love, love those areas. They are absolutely beautiful. So if you can get a recommendation for a good, safe hotel then it may be worth the stay, but I'd be careful getting around.

We went on a cruise that stopped there but chose to take a trip to Sorrento and Amalfi.

I have not heard anything good about Naples itself but amazing things about the surrounding area - Island of Capri, Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi Coast, etc.
We are going there on a cruise in Sept, so I can let you know when I get back

Re: Please tell me about Naples, Italy
here is a quick review I did of my trip back in may.
I would dedicate at least one day to Naples. it is everything everyone said that is BAD, but so many things that are good.
it is INCREDIBLY busy. noisy. out of control. but there is so much HISTORY there. I am really glad we went.
we stayed at a great little hotel in the old district Hotel Il convento. as the name suggests, it is in an old convent. near some great restaurants.
I agree that I wouldn't use Naples as the jumping off point to see the rest of the area, but going down there I don't think it's to be missed.
the larger towns on the Amalfi will be more expensive.
good luck with your planning.
