House with a garage?
DH is OBSESSED with his collectible car. Unfortunately our house DOES NOT have a garage. DH wants to build one. I don't think it's worth the $$ (we haven't priced one out yet but I bet it's close to 15K)
Do you think that building a garage will INCREASE the value of a home?
Also, please keep in mind that we may only live here for another five years.
All opinions please!

Re: House with a garage?
I was told it does. My DH too has collectible cars 2- 1 is stored in Maryland and the other 1 is here in the garage. I wanted to make part of the garage into a storage area and DH's cousin who is a lawyer and handles RE said not to convert it b/c it is a selling tool. Honestly if you are only going to be there for 5 years I dont think its going to make a difference with this kind of market here in new york. Good Luck.

Re: House with a garage?
Thanks. I personally don't think it will raise the value of our home that much and I think that if we move in 5 years that it will really be silly to build it. If we were going to live here forever - than sure - go ahead - but I really don't see that happening.

Re: House with a garage?
Diana, we have been going to open houses and it seems that the garage does raise the value slightly - but probably the amount it would cost to build it or a little more. We are debating whether or not to buy a house without one and when we look at very similar houses, one with a garage, one without, the garage house is higher in price.
Your taxes will also go up some if you build a garage, so that would be a consideration too.

Re: House with a garage?
I know - and our taxes are already 10K so I think that's crazy.
When I do open houses and meet people looking for places I ask them what's important to them (basement, garage, etc) and MOST of the time they all say that they don't NEED a garage. That's why I think while it might be nice to have - some people don't find it a necessity.
I always grew up with a two car garage that we actually parked our cars in - most people use them for storage now.

yes it most def will increase the value of your home as well as desireability
But i am not sure, if i was only going to be there another 5 years...that i would sink 15K into a garage

Re: House with a garage?
hmm, tough call. I live in an area where lots of homes don't have basements, so they convert their garages into family rooms, etc. I see the desire for a garage, but I don't necessarily think I'd pay too much more for a house with a garage.

I know that in Levittown they convert alot of their garages into extra rooms. This garage wouldn't be attached - it would be set back in the backyard.
We also have a full finished basement with a bathroom so that could be used for plenty of storage.

Re: House with a garage?
Would a garage also increase the taxes? I'm not sure I'd a) want to spend the $$$ on one if we were going to move and b) raise the taxes if we were going to move

ME TOO!!!!! I don't think that five years is a long time to wait to get a garage. In the meantime my parents offered that he can keep the car in their garage in the winter time.
Men and their cars....I just don't get it!

Re: House with a garage?
If I was staying there just five years, I wouldn't go through the trouble (or expense). I do think a garage does raise the value of the house. Though the people who are looking to buy your house in the future may not fancy cars, they may need extra storage space.
