We pay it with our mortgage and we use the same company that we use for car insurance and health insurance. You'll probably get discounts if you use the same insurance company for more than one thing.

We had everything with State Farm but DH actually got a quote from the Herschfeld Agency (I think in Huntington) which IL's have used for years. They came in over $350 cheaper for an umbrella policy that includes home and cars. Not sure of the name of the actual insurer as we just received the paperwork yesterday.

Definitely shop around and inquire about discounts.

For example, if you have a fire hydrant within a certain amount of feet from your property you get a discount.

Ours is about $570 a year through Met Life. I called all over and that was the best price. You will be asked for lots of details about your house, like its age, circuit breakers or fuse boxes, proximity to fire hydrant, etc.

I got a huge quote from one company because I thought we had fuse boxes instead of circuit breakers (or maybe it was the other way around? I don't remember).

It could be any number of factors- I think I also heard that older houses are more expensive than newer houses.

Maybe post on Businesses Helping Families, maybe they can break down the specifics for you?

ETA- I also live in Putnam county, not on LI. I don't know if it's a little less up here.

Re: Homeowners INsurance??

We use statefarm and they charge us $330 for the year. Our home is less than 10 years old, 1450 SQ ft and has an alarm. We are in NJ so that might make a difference.

Location is definitely going to play a BIG role in rating a policy.
Rating info (such as what was posted above), limits and forms (which HO form) the companies are quoting will make a big difference too.

Also if you have an underground oil tank that affects pricing-we do and our quotes have all been over 1200.

Re: Homeowners INsurance??

I went with AG Edwards in Sayville & for house, car, umbrella & ring protection it was 3300. I got a really high quote from geico when I asked & we had our car insurance with them. If the company doesn't underwrite it directly it will be a lot more if they do then it is cheaper. Our two cheapest quotes were who we went with which is Kemper & State Farm. We got the max coverage on everything.

Re: Homeowners INsurance??

I don't know what decides the premium, but I was really surprised at how high our quotes were when we were shopping around last year. MetLife (who I am supposed to get a discount with through work) was $2,000. I eventually went with our auto insurer, Travellers and it was $1,500. I have since switched to Liberty Mutual. Their homeowners was the same but their auto was almost $1,000 less than what we were paying with Travellers. State Farm gave us the lowest quote, but they low-balled us on the replacement value of our home.

We have a 3-bed colonial from the early 1900's. We are close to the water, but not in a flood zone, we have brand new electric and the firehouse is right around the corner, so I can't figure out why we pay pay so much.

If you're close to the water wind will play a factor too. How close? Even though you may not be in a flood zone depending upon how many miles you are will be a factor. The age of the house will be a factor too. Are there any other updates besides electric? (That's a huge bonus there that the electric has been updated recently.)

We are South of Montauk but probably a mile from the beach. We do have a couple of canals either side of our house. The whole house has been updated, heating, central air, windows, etc.. I think it's the age of the house more than anything.
