DH still will not budge..

I posted earlier the other day about buying an older home (20 yrs old) in a top-notch area vs. a "new" (5yrs or less) home in a good area.

DH likes the look and feel of a new house with new bathrooms, kitchem, etc.

This house is a real find, only needs paint and new bathrooms. In fact, the agent even took us to another home around the corner, which was sold last year that looked like ours. Just by painting alond it has been transformed.

He is driving me nuts, and we argued back and forth on this for hours. How can I convince him? We have about 20k (after we make the down payment) to use for renovations, we will still have a sizable savings account. He is driving me Chat Icon

If you buy the "new" house, you'll have a kitchen and bathroom that is a few years old. If you buy the "old" house, and put the extra money into it, you'll have a brand-new kitchen, bathroom, etc.

I'm not sure how to convince him other than using logic, which doesn't seem to be working.... Chat Icon

Re: DH still will not budge..

20 years is not an older home. He should come see my 80 year old house.

You buy location first. That is the #1 rule of real estate. You can't move your location but you can always update your house.

Also you are buying someone else's taste. I say make it your own. Try to convince him again. You know you are right!

It's a long term investement. The better location will always pay off. I know people that wait years for a house to come on the market in exactly the neighborhood they want. They won't buy anywhere else. There is a reason for that.

Tell him the first rule of real estate is Location location location and that the first house has that and the second doesn't.

Re: DH still will not budge..

20k is a lot of money but not really when it comes to re-doing a kitchen and bathrooms - you can easily spend 20k or more just updating a kitchen - so maybe that is why your DH is leaning towards the newer place? because he wants everything new right away? and doesn't want to do a little at a time with the older place?

it's hard - but i think you should go with the better location....

if you want the old house and he wants the new house it sounds like you guys aren't really on the same page - so maybe neither house is the "one" and you should keep looking?

We do not need to do the kitchen- fortunately that is brand-new. Just the bathrooms and paint. I agree- he wants everything new right away. But then we need to pay more $$, and we have to take someone's else style, not have the chance to make it our own.

Agreed, you can't pick up and move the house to another location but you can always renovate. Hopefully you guys can come to an agreement or perhaps, keep looking. Good Luck!
