Talk to me about Mexico

DH and I booked a trip to Mexico for our anniversary in September. We're staying at the Excellence Playa Mujeras resort. What should we know about travelling there (not swine flu related)? I remember when we went to DR we had to pay a fee to get in. Is there anything like that in Mexico? Do we have to avoid drinking water? Any must sees?

I've never been to the Excellence Playa Mujerers, but DH and I stayed at the Excellence Riviera Maya last summer, which is all part of the same chain, and we absolutely loved it. I'm sure the two resorts are very similar and that you will be very happy with your choice.
As for a fee to get into Mexico, I don't recall one. We just had to go through customs, show our passports, and have our bags xrayed,and then we were on our way to the hotel. If there was a fee then in was minimal enough that I don't remember it.
We really enjoyed visiting the ruins at Tulum while we were there, but it's a pretty far drive from Cancun. Just know that most excursions that are booked as part of a tour bus package will involve several more hours of travel time than you would expect since the bus will have to stop at every hotel along the way to pick up more tourists. It took us about 3 hrs to go about 40 miles, which was beyond frustrating.
I'm sure you will love your stay at the Excellence though!

We are going to Catalonia Tulum resort July 28th and Danielle and I have been to mexico once before. Two years ago we went to Cancun. The airport is very clean. Bring a pen on the plane to fill out the papers that they will give you on the plane.

Beware of time share people in the airport....Just keep walking.

I dont remember if there is a fee, but I dont believe so.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm so excited about this trip it's not even funny. We stayed at Excellence Punta Cana for our HM so I have no doubts Excellence Playa Mujeras is going to be just as wonderful.

I agree with the "don't drink the water" recommendation. I actually didn't drink any water while there and I still got pretty sick to my stomach - all the drinks have ice which of course melts. I know a lot of resorts will say they only use filtered water, but bring some tummy medication just in case.

Yes, definately bring tummy medicine!! We didn't drink water either but both got sick on our last day of our trip.

Also, if you go into town or to any kind of straw market, vendor place - they always ask you if you are on your honeymoon and where you are from. If you say yes to honeymoon or say that you are from NY, they charge you more money. Seriously, we started telling people we were from VA, and the prices started dropping!
