AGREED-UPON 2006-07 STATE BUDGET AN ENORMOUS VICTORY FOR HARDWORKING TAXPAYERS
Legislature in the Process of Approving Budget Bills By April 1st
Friday, March 31, 2006
Senator Trunzo hailed the recently completed 2006-07 State budget agreed upon by the Legislature as an enormous victory for the hardworking taxpayers of New York State. As the work of the conference committees is now complete, and the Legislature is now in the process of approving budget bills.
"New Yorkers are insisting on accountability and results," Senator Trunzo said. "This budget represents a bipartisan process of public hearings and discussions about our priorities for 2006. This year’s budget meets their call in the form of tax cuts that will return money to families, makes important investments in education and health care, and helps make New York more economically competitive."
According to the Senate Finance Committee, the State has a multi-billion dollar surplus and it has been the Senate Majority’s top priority to return as much of that money to the taxpayers as possible. As a result, the budget will return more than $4.1 billion to the taxpayers of New York State and includes the Senate’s plan to provide almost $2 billion in direct rebates to homeowners.
The budget agreement also includes the elimination of the personal income tax marriage penalty, providing a child education tax credit to parents of children in school as well as the end of sales tax on clothing and shoe purchases on April 1st.
"A record education aid increase of more than $1.3 billion, as well as an investment of $2.6 billion in new school construction aid will benefit school children throughout the State," according to Senator Trunzo. "This budget will give schools the resources they need to educate our children."
"Restorations in health care will ensure that our hospitals, nursing homes and emergency rooms stay open to provide care for all New Yorkers and that home care is provided for the sick and disabled. Maintaining access to quality, affordable health care was a priority goal of this budget
