Mystic, Ct vs. Newport, RI
I have done a search on here and these two places seem to get the most rec. for a weekend getaway. We are deciding if we should do this without our little one or with. We want a nice place that has lots to do for both us and the little one just in case we take her. So if you have been please tell me which one you recommend and where you stayed.
TIA

Re: Mystic, Ct vs. Newport, RI
We're going to Newport, RI for a few days in July. After doing a search on here and looking at some old posts, we decided to stay in Newport and then stop in Mystic for the day on the way back to NY.
Newport also got better reviews on TripAdvisor when it came to variety of activities, tours and restaurants.
ETA: We're staying at the Hyatt Regency Newport on Goat Island.

Never been to Newport but I think Mystic is a snoozefest and nothing special.

Newport is more upscale, but there are more things to do with a little one in Mystic. You can stay at one and still easily visit the other though. And if it's a beautiful weekend, the beaches in RI are great. But I would go to Narraganset or Westerly for the beach- the beaches in Newport aren't that great.

I LOVE newport- dont see the appeal in Mystic at all - we usually stop there for something to eat and a walk around the town but from start to finish I am over it in 2 hours. Definitely go to Newport - love, love, love newport. We have stayed at lots of places there and the last was the viking and it was great. have fun.

Newport is better if you are going by yourselves, more to do. But you mention a little one, not sure how old, but there is more for kids in Mystic because of the Seaport.

Love Newport, the Viking hotel has really great food, and there are the mansion tours, etc. Very nice place. We also stayed at the Hydrangea Inn Bed & Breakfast and we had an awesome time.

I agree with this. Newport is more about touring hsitorical homes and understanding the areas history.
Mystic has the Seaport to climb around large ships, the aquarium to touch and see sea life, has shopping, etc.

I have never been to Newport, RI. We went to Mystic last weekend though by ferry. We went to the aquarium, the Submarine Museum, and the Olde Mystic Shops. Nothing fancy or overly exciting but it was a nice, relaxing weekend. Plus the weather was beautiful which helps. ETA: We went to Mystic Pizza too.

We actually did both. Stayed in the Mystic Marriott, then drove up to Newport the next morning and spent a day there. (You can drive it in under an hour). Both are great, though I think we were some of the only people touring Mystic w/o a small child or retirement fund!
