Re: Ok, what house and yard stuff did we all do this weekend?

DH mowed the lawn and did some yard clean up - he also put all his laundry away. Ugh. That means I now have to put mine away.

I worked on TY cards, painted an end table, a sewing cabinet, and two picture frames.

It takes a while - sand, prime, sand, paint, sand, paint. Chat Icon

Took me two and half days.

Finishing up the sewing cabinet tonight (have to put the knobs on) and two other pic frames, as well as an upholstered bench (I'm painting the legs). I love painting furniture!!

- Bought lumber timbers for one of our backyard garden beds.

Oooh what's that? Regular wood? Or did you get the bender board stuff?

It's the pressure treated wood that is rounded. It's called "Pressure Treated Landscape Timber".

They are usually $3.97 each, but Lowe's & HD just had a sale for $1.97 each. We bought 22 of them. Chat Icon

Our whole weekend was house work!

*Planted flowers in our flower boxes
*Pruned the bushes
*Weeded
*Reseeded the grass in spots that are bare
*Cleaned the room we just had redone
*Relocated & set up new closet
*Mopped all floors & dusted whole house
*Laundry on all winter clothes packed away, laundry on all summer clothes pulled out

Very productive & tiring weekend!

We finally put a garden in the front of our house...which is technically the side of our but looks like the front b/c we are a corner lot (confusing, I know), we put down mulch! It makes a huge difference. I have pics, I will post tonight.

What happened to no more yardwork expenses this year? Chat Icon

Now that the circular bed is planted, I have to start thinking about edging. You know what I didn't realize? When Fernando comes to do the patio next week, he's going to remove my existing walkway to the front of the house. Which is red brick.

DUH. I can use the leftover brick to edge! Chat Icon

I know it's not as cool looking as the other stuff, but hey - reduce, reuse, recycle. Right?

I think I have enough where I could do something like this:

If I do it flush with the ground, DH could still run the mower's wheels right on the border in a circle. I'd just have to make sure they were all level. Not a hard thing to do when the whole bed is mulched.

What happened? LOL! Do you really have to ask? Chat Icon I changed my mind silly! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon No really we were planning on this for this summer. Just buying stuff as we see it on sale. We still have to move our ornamental grass which is like 4 ft high already if not 5 ft. Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm sure the root ball on those things is going to be crazy. Chat Icon

What a great way to recycle your brick. Plus Fernando doesn't have to take it away and you don't have to pay that cost to take it away. You will only have to get rid of the wood deck then. Chat Icon Nice! You just saved yourself money. That is perfect for that circle garden in front and easy to mow the lawn. Nice! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I love all of the pics!

So of course this project is not 100% complete-they rarely are complete at my house but DH built a new front deck & walkway for us. Our house is a 1980's nightmare with the cheesy "modern" architecture & we are trying to develop it into something more appealing.
So here are the front steps that came with the house, this pic was taken after I stained them last year because I new we'd be living with them for a while. Notice the saggy, broken down brick walkway
External Image
So this is what DH has done so far
External Image
The deck is a combo of mahogany & epay wood. The white trim is azac. The handrail will be mahagony with white ballisters.
External Image
The walkway is bluestone slab & blue stone chips and the best part about is it has radiant heat under it. With the flick of a switch the tubing under it will warm up preventing ice of snow from freezing on it. It is going to be hooked up to an electric water heater that will eventually be powered by Solar energy.
The lights are copper antiques that we bought last year at a hamptons tag sale & DH totally rebuilt them, the light by the front door is copper too.
We need to order a new front door, storm door and DH needs to add a mahagony kickplate under the door. Now I can fix up our front beds, DH was not kind to my plants while he was working on this project Chat Icon

That's pretty awesome Kelly! So jealous of your talented and ambitious husband. Chat Icon

You reminded me, I need to figure out how to improve our front stoop too. We might be replacing it in a couple of years, so I thought I'd have to get the paint off somehow, I guess sand it. And repaint it.

That's a nice idea, the lattice underneath it too. I hope you don't mind if I steal the idea. Chat Icon

Re: Ok, what house and yard stuff did we all do this weekend?

Sunday I went to my moms and helped her pull off her pool cover, fix the fence, set up her gazebo.

Then Monday, we had landscaping guys come and remove all of the woodchips and crap that was left on the lawn when we purchased it. They leveled out the yard, put down soil and seed. I planted some impatients around the new mailbox DH and I installed (i'm so proud of us) and i got a few potting pots and planted all the flowers that all of our wonderful friends have been bringing us! WOW! I feel totally lazy Chat Icon Greeny, everything looks AWESOME. I love it! I decided not to do my gardens up this year (I usually spend WAY too much) and I put all my $$ into tattoos... Chat Icon HEY, they last forever, the flowers will die!!!
