Nice, Barcelona, Positano... need "must see "advice
My husband and I will be going on a Western Mediterranean Cruise in Sept.(for a mutual - milestone birthday !) We will visit : Rome, Genoa,Nice,Barcelona, Palma De Mallorca (Spain), Sardinia and then 4 days in Positano. We need some advice on "must" see sights!!! Best way to travel from Positano to Sorrento, Capri and other surrounding towns? Never been to Spain, France, Genoa or Positano before. Would love to have sandals made in Spain or Italy, also Shorty requested a Christening outfit... Please Help!!! TIA

Barcelona...LOVE it. not sure how much time you have but I loved:
you MUST walk Las Ramblas (just hold a little tighter to your purse...it's a high pickpocket zone like Times Square)
La Sagrada Familia...the unfinished church designed by Gaudi. gorgeous.
the waterfront.
have Sidra (hard apple cider)...poured from arms length into your glass...divine!
tapas. tapas. tapas.
Positano and amalfi..the BEST way to get around is on Ferries (or hire your own boat for those days)
In positano they have bus and taxi service, but it's far more scenic and beautiful to travel to other towns via the gorgeous Mediterranean. walking is nice, but they are cliff towns so it IS a work out.
Palma de Mallorca: you must hunt down Rafael Nadal and put him in your bag for me
all joking aside (well, probably not but I digress ) many of the must see sites TO ME are churches and museums. each city you go to, I would go to the Duomo or Cathedral of the city and start from there (they are usually in the heart of the oldest, and to me, most interesting parts).
I would BUY sandals in Spain...home of the espaidrilles, and have sandals made in either Positano or Capri (I wanted until positano and paid about 10 euro less for the same sandal)
I know there are a few people visiting the area soon so I will look at my receipts and stuff and try to get names.
some of the best things about traveling to Europe in my experience is simply strolling the streets, smelling, hearing, and tasting everything these new places have to offer....even if it's stuff we think we know at home (I challenge you to find a better slice of serrano ham or cappuccino anywhere here than you will have in their homelands)
you guys have raised some wonderful and GORGEOUS children! enjoy yourselves and your trip.
oh, there are many wedding/communion/bridal/baptismal stores all over Naples with some beautiful things. it's an easy trip from Positano (if no ferry service directly from Positano to Naples, take the ferry from Positano to Sorrento, and take the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Napoli- its a train line for that area) it's an easy half day or day trip, and you could include a stop at Pompeii in there as well!!!

now nice!! sounds like an awesome itinerary! which cruise line is this?
anyway there's so much to see in rome its like so hard to narrow down but i'd say The coluseum and St. Peters of course! beware there's a long line to get into st peters.
in barcelona there's las ramblas (a long street with shops etc) and i'd say to also go to La Segrada Familia(the sacred family) its a church unlike any you've ever seen, created by Gaudi.
have a fantastic time!

Wow, thanks for all the great info!! It's RCCL (7 day-Western Med.) unbelievable deal! We were originally just going to the Amalfi Coast, but the deal on RCCL was to good to pass up ! We have been to Rome, Florence & Venice before, but you can never see enough of Rome ! We are the type that like to venture off the beaten path, we like to travel like the locals do, so trains and water taxis are no problem and we try not to eat in the "touristy" places. Is it expensive to have sandals made?
Ophelia, I can't wait to hear more of your advice! and TY... I do think I have GREAT kids, but i am very biased
P.S. We will have a full day in each port, till 10 pm in Barcelona.

I agree with the selections above. La Sagrada Familia is incredible! When you look at all the detail of the church it is absolutely amazing.
There is also the Picasso museum in Barcelona which is great.
I never had Sidra (although I will have to try it next time I'm there) but did enjoy a lot of paella and sangria!
While I'm sure there are a few places you can do this in Barcelona, we did go to a restaurant that had flamenco dancers performing while you eat. It was so much fun. And if you are so inclined (as I was )you can go up and dance with them. I don't know the name off the top of my head but it will come to me.
Have a great trip!

your post reminded me...
we also saw a bullfight in Barcelona. not sure if you'll have the time (or the stomach for it) but I enjoyed the pomp and circumstance of it.
it's definitely NOT for everyone...and it's rough seeing the less experienced matadors tangle with the bulls (one of the bulls labored on far too long b/c the matador did not get the instant "kill" shot...it was tough to see ) but it's a part of spanish culture and I am glad we went. the headlining matador was incredible. to see the kill shot, and this animal immediately drop was astounding.
again, not for everyone, but another thing to do while there.

The architecture is amazing in Barcelona
I loved Casa Battlo (Gaudi) - it was my favorite as far as all the architecture was concerned
Casa Battlo is located on Passeig de Gracia...I really liked that area...you can sit at an outdoor cafe and have tappas and sangria and people watch all day long!
Ramblas was a must see too
I also liked Parc Guell - but depending upon how much time you have , it may be a little out of the way, although the subway and bus systems are easy and very convenient!
have fun! I would love to go to Positano one day!
