Patio questions
We are putting in a pool and are getting prices for a patio. I can't decide what to use (pavers, brick etc..) - I want something that will stay cool as it will be in direct sun most of the day. Also, if you have any reccomendations for patio installation let me know!

Re: Patio questions
We used Travertine for our patio because it doesn't get hot (it has no metal content), isn't slippery when wet and it's quite comfortable under your feet. We have a brick walkway in the front yard and I can say that it can get very hot (I witnessed my then 2 yr old walk on it and then run off it. )
We used a distributor from FL and had them deliver a flatbed to our home (the stoneyards in the area couldn't compete.)

I just looked up travertine and it looks really nice!! Is it more expensive then pavers? And did you install it yourself or did you just have it delivered and had someone install it?

I believe we were able to get it either at the same cost or possibly less than what you would pay for pavers. (I have to ask my DH to be sure.)
We had our landscaper install it (they have a masonry division). The main portion of the patio is dry set over a concrete slab and the soldiers/border are wet set. I believe the labor may be more expensive for the travertine as there's a decent amount of cutting and leveling that needs to be done, whereas pavers are easier to lay and because they're smaller, they don't require the same amount of work to make sure they're level. And obviously anything that requires the use of mortar is going to cost more.
This is how the travertine arrived:

This is the patio as of last summer (a bit dirty because we were doing regrading and building retaining walls):
ETA: Just asked my DH what our costs were (the spreadsheets are on his comp. ). The travertine came out to just under $5.50 a sq ft. (Including delivery charge.) The installation was about $7.50 a sq ft (that included the concrete slab.) My DH says our landscaper screwed up his numbers because installation should have been higher.

Re: Patio questions
We just had a large patio installed and used tumbled pavers. I haven't had a chance to upload pictures but we loved our installer. www.Perfect Pavers.biz, the owner Dan is so great to work with. He made a number of trips back to our house to work with us on different designs etc and to bring us different samples of the pavers. We are so pleased with how it turned out.

Re: Patio questions
Chatham—does travertine stain easily? I love it and am considering it for our patio, but I'm afraid of staining because it's so light!

Not from what I can tell. We've only had the patio for a year now, but there's been plenty of leaves, dirt & wood (thanks to the dogs) on the patio over the winter and there are no permant marks or discoloration. If there is, it's temporary and it goes away over a short period of time with the rain & sun's help.
Fortunately, the only things we've spilled on it have been beer and bubbles.
You can put a sealer on it, but we haven't as of yet. We've been considering it only because I've seen cases where it enhances the veining/characteristics of the stone. I'd prefer not to have to do that upkeep, so that's why I'm hesitant to do it in the first place and it's not like travertine needs a sealer since there are plenty of buildings made out of travertine and they've held up quite well (e.g. The Colosseum.)
