Re: What type of lawnmower do you have?

By manual do you mean the "swirly" cylender type that you count on the blade and you walking to mow the grass?

If so, we used to have one when I was a teenager because we rented a house that had little grass. What a PITA!!!!!! If you need to lose 50Lbs... that's one way to do it...then toss it in the garbage!!Chat Icon

Or do you mean the one that is gas powered by you need to push. Not self propelled?

We have a self propelled. My yard is 90x100. It's a gas one. I go at a fast pace and realized 1/ I am getting a semi workout 2/ I used less gas.

It's hard enough to do the yard. I don't need more aggravation.

The "swirly" kind is what I'm considering as manual.

That stuff is great for the first 20 feet. Then the blade gets dull very fast. So you will to do a lot of back and forth on the same spot to cut that $#@($ dandelion yellow flower. It gets exhausting very easily. And I was 15 at the time with a tiny tiny yard (16' x30' on the side and about the same on the back).

ETA: maybe they changed the type of blades but still it's not easy by any means. I consider a push (not propelled) lawnmower hard enough.

I dont think those work to well for large pieces of property. My dad is a horticulturist and he would be there for days if he used that

Yeah, I realize it's going to be a lot more work. I don't have a whole lot of grass. I need the exercise, and I want to at least try to waste less fossil fuels (I need to do something to compensate for my 8 cylinder pickup.... Chat Icon Chat Icon )

You can try it. Just buy a sludge hammer at the same time. So if you hate it you can always use it was a way to pass frustation on with a sludge hammer.

Why don't you get an electric one? They work very efficiently for a small lawn. And with all your solar panels it really should pay itself. And no pollution!!

$$$ I've looked into those. I have a lot of things I need to spend money on right now, so I'm hoping to postpone that for a bit. Maybe next year, especially if the manual "swirly" one doesn't work out for me... I'm not getting rid of the gas one, since I know that even if the manual one works, if I let the grass get too long, it won't work right.

Re: What type of lawnmower do you have?

Let me look up mine for you, and the Consumer Reports article. It's electric/battery, so once it's charged you can mow cord free. Best electric mower they rated, and more environmentally friendly than gas. Chat Icon

We have the battery powered one from Home Depot. I would NOT recommend it. It only took one charge last year and now it does not work. I have no idea how to get a new battery in it. It was 350 and the biggest waste of money. I am seriously disappointed with it.

Re: What type of lawnmower do you have?

Wow, I'm the only one who voted electric.

Shawn, this is what we have:

Black and Decker electric mower

It was very important to us that we not buy a gas mower, so we only looked at electric. They all have their drawbacks but this one was the best of the bunch, according to Consumer Reports.

We only mow once a week and know we're going to beforehand so we just plug it in, push it under the overhang, and leave it. We have a 1/4 acre and do the whole lawn with battery life to spare on a full charge.

It's not as light as a self-propelled mower, so it's better for level yards. They don't recommend it for people who have 1/3 acre and above. Since a lot of our plot is now covered by driveway, rocks, mulched beds, the deck and the house - this mower is perfect for our situation.

So far we've had no issues. We bought it in fall 2007 when we bought our house. Hope this helps, good luck finding a good one! Chat Icon

Thanks! I'll definitely look seriously into this.
And, it's relatively cheap! Just checking a few stores that have it, and it's only between $220-$250. The other electrics I've looked at were closer to $500. This puts it well within range (the manuals are like $150 or so).

I don't have a lot of grass anymore. (Technically, I have almost NO grass at the moment.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ). The house reno took up a lot of property (we have a variance to have more house than the allowed amount, and another variance to have a bigger driveway than the allowed amount). I also have plans for a patio and landscaping, so this sounds ideal.

Re: What type of lawnmower do you have?

I don't mow the apartment I'm in. This topic came up on mothers day though... my brother purchased the manual one recently and is in love with it. He loves how it cuts the lawn. He only uses it for his back yard which isn't that large. He uses a self propelled one for the front. He has said he prefers the manual one. He said it was only $100.00
