McMansion article
Anti-McMansion
This is happening a bit in my neighborhood - 3 new homes are up that look pretty silly, not just b/c the property can't be more than 1/5 of an acre, but they just don't "go" with the neighborhood.

OMG there is one right next door to my friends 1 floor ranch in lynbrook. The house they built is sooo big that there are 44 high hats on the first floor. The house is literally 4 times bigger than my friends 1 floor ranch Scott

ITS A DISGRACE. NOTHING LIKE A 3000 SQ FT HOUSE ON 60 X 100 VERY ATTRACTIVE
PEOPLE PRICE THEMSELVES OUT OF A NEIGHBORHHOD ALSO
MY BLOCK CONSIST OF HOUSES IN THE 500K MARK ALL THE HOUSES ARE RELATIVELY THE SAME EXCEPT FOR THE BEAST THEY ERRECTED AND THEY ARE NOW SELLING FOR 700K WHO THE HECK WOULD BUY IT
NONE OF THE OTHER HOMES ARE WORTH THAT MUCH

Gabrielle - I totally agree! The one down the block from us went on FIRE this past weekend! The garage was on fire - I hate that house. Its huge!! It has no yeard either and the builder wanted SOOOO much $$$ for it that he couldnt sell it and ended up moving in to it himself!

I was so nosy I drove by later that day and saw the burnt garage They have a lot of motorcycles! Yeah, what's up with that house - there is no backyard! And then there are the two further down, on Norton maybe? - they are right next to each other, each huge on weird lots.
Have you seen the one near the Vernon Valley Road deli?

Re: McMansion article
the other thing that bothers me about these mcmansions is that people never try to maintain the architectural integrity of the house, they turn mid-century ranches into victorians. this is way our country(especially our area) has such limited architectural history. We ruin everything old by trying to make it something in style.

Re: McMansion article
If you think the ones they are building out here are bad, you should see what is happening in Queens. My MIL lives in Floral Park and the entire neighborhood, when it was built, consisted of capes (going back about 50 years ago; small property). Some have been expanded, but most are still the same. The neighborhood is changing over culturally and the new owners are building houses that are not to be believed. The one going up next door to my MIL is three stories high with a full basement. The house extends about two feet from the property line on each side and all of the backyard is gone with the exception of a few feet. Makes you wonder how they got a variance! If that is not bad enough, the colors of some of these houses could blind you. Pink, yellow and orange are not uncommon. So, just when you think it's bad out here, it's worse somewhere else!

Re: McMansion article
And who the heck wants to do all that cleaning????
Personally I think we humans have a lot of nerve, taking so much space for ourselves and kicking nature out the back door. I hate the McMansion, Bigger-is-Better society that we have turned into.

Re: McMansion article
ok I know I'll get flamed for this, but we're all entitled to our opinion. Personally, they don't bother me, I'm a queens girl, and I can speak for the way they look in my part of queens, its been tastefully done.... at least I think. I have a ranch home, and thats a big one to enlarge... I have every intention of lifting it up another floor... (if I never do, it's only bc i decide to buy something already bigger in the area) It's very popular to do so in my area as well... think about it, say you need more space, would u . build up and make more space on you're own if you financially cannot buy a bigger home, or buy a bigger home and struggle.... its to each's own, but i'll be the outsider and say it doesn't bother me, i love how they dress up the neighborhood...again if its tastefully done.

Re: McMansion article
A lot of houses in Levittown are being expanded to the nth degree; many people are even raising the roof.
For the most part, the ones I've seen look nice, if not a big out of place. But my wonder is what happens if/when the person decides to sell. I think people will need to stay in those houses for a long time to make what was probably a huge investment worthwhile.

They most likey wouldn't want to move anytime soon if they put so much money and effort into their home. Personally,I'd rather have a kick a$$ house than a kick a$$ yard.
You're home is your castle,it should look like one too juuuussst kidding.
