i prefer something that goes across my body and something with compartments when traveling abroad. this way i know its in front of my body and theres a specific spot for passports, wallet, etc.

Not sure which camp you are, but I brought a Vera Bradley tote with me to Italy. It was nice in Florence because we walked around a lot and so I brought flip flops to change into when my heels hurt.

I might look "touristy" but I would wear a messenger style bag for comfort and so as not to get pickpocketed.

I used a le sport sac. I'm not a huge fan of them, but it was PERFECT. It was so lite, and it held my guide book camera and $$.

I own this bag and it holds a ton of stuff!!! The only thing is, is that it's snug if you want to wear it as an over the shoulder bag..

I agree w/the PP's -- something that goes over the shoulder.
I carry a coach one that's all black, similar to this one that I purchased at the outlet store for about $120. You can wear it on your shoulder or across your body b/c it has two straps.

Re: What bag would you use...
I would get a bag that has a zip closure. Last time I travelled I used a bag that had a snap closure. It was annoying because I had to always be holding it on my lap or between my feet. If it tipped over I was thinking my lipgloss would be rolling up and down the aisle and my wallet and checkbook would fall out.

I was going to suggest LeSportsac- they're very light and won't kill you from dragging it around all day!

LOVE the Kate Spade bag! I would want something I can sling over my shoulder comfortably. I love that it has the long strap in addition to the shorter handles.
