First appointment is set!

So my first RE appointment is not 3 months from now but May 18! I am so excited, scared, nervous. What do I ask? Does Joe come with me? What happens? How long does it take? ANY info is appreciated!

Re: First appointment is set!

That's great!!!

I think your hubby should go with you, but he doesn't have to (Mine couldn't come with me to my consult). The RE will ask you a bunch of questions and maybe do BW and a sono. He may wait and schedule you for a CD3 BW and sono.

Re: First appointment is set!

The Dr. will likely go through your medical history as well as your husbands. Depending on your situation they will then decide what course of action/treatment they will have you on. With PCOS, the first step might be to put you on Metformin, and start you on Clomid your next cycle (after CD3 testing). They may either then decide on IUI or timed intercourse when you are ready to ovulate... which they will monitor you for if they put you on Clomid.

This is just my guess, as this is what my RE did when I first went.. although I had already been on Metformin for 8 months prior to going to the RE.

My RE required my DH to be there for the first consultation. And required me to have all my medical history file from my OB to his office prior to our consultation.

Ok....Joe is going with me and my medical files are being faxed. The thing is my insurance does not cover fertility tx's just tx's to fix the underlying medical condition. Ie: They won't cover Clomid for infertility, but they will cover it to stimulate ovulation since I have PCOS. They can do a sono to see if i'm oing due to PCOS, but not to help with timed intercource for conception. It 100% does NOT include IUI's or IVF. So we will not be doing these more then likely due to finances.

I understand about the finances, but I have to be honest, the RE's main goal is to get you pregnant and they are (in my experience and from what I've seen here), pretty aggressive with obtaining that goal. If you are not planning on doing any IUI's or IVF if you need to go that route, I'm really not sure what the RE can do for you other than give you Clomid and send you on your way. Clomid can also only be used for a certain amount of time because of the side effects (like thining of the uterine lining).

I'm not saying this to sound harsh or be unsympathtic to what you are going through. Dealing with any form of IF is awful, I'm just being honest and speak from my experience.

Re: First appointment is set!

I agree 100% I want to get pg quickly also, but realisticly we do not have thousands stashed away for it. I talked to them yesterday about my insurance and they said they deal with them all the time and not to worry...they will help get stuff covered. IVF and IUI's just aren't for us. Not just because of money, but because I have 1/2 a uterous and multiples are NOT an option for me. I also refuse to do SR.

Just take it one day at a time. It can be really overwhelming sometimes, but we are all here for you!

Just so you know.. ANY fertility medications are going to give you a chance of multiples because you'll be producing multiple follies - and while some women on Clomid only produce 1 or 2 eggs, some produce 3-4... so naturally your risk of multiples is increased.

IUIs aren't THAT expensive... especially with Clomid where you don't need that much monitoring. My injectables cycle was $2700 which included everything but the meds... (all monitoring, even first OB appt, etc).

IVF of course is really expensive but there are lots of financing options.. and that's probably the best way to ensure a singleton (by doing an SET - single embryo transfer)... but even then, and always, an embryo can split.

Make sure you tell your RE that you will not even consider SR as an option (and just so you know.. saying you'd "consider" it... doesn't mean you are obligated to do it... it just means that you would keep that option just in case the most extreme of circumstances happened that put your life or your babies lives in jeopardy)... because they will chose a less agressive treatment for you.
