Texas arresting people in bars for being drunk
Undercover agents pursue inebriates in a pre-emptive strategy

Updated: 7:12 p.m. ET March 22, 2006
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said on Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission’s Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

“We feel that the only way we’re going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this,” she said.

“There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they’re intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car,” Beck said. “People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss.”

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

If they are going to arrest people for being drunk then you might as well close down the freaking Bars!

Yes, it does seem like the cops have better things to do.

Technically, they are correct... public intoxication is illegal. Yes, you can be arrested for just stumbling down the street drunk but honestly, if you ask most cops in most places they have "bigger fish to fry".

Seems to me they are trying to raise more money by issuing them fines/summonses.Chat Icon

ETA: They do have a point... most of these people will get in a car and drive then they are a deadly weapon. In most DWI accidents it is rarely the intoxicated party who is killed.

Re: Ok I think this is asinine

think about what its avoiding though...drunk drivers...people starting fights..

they arent going to arrest a buzzed person--they will arrest people acting like azzholes..
im not saying its fair- because we have all had our moments- but i certainly agree about stopping people from getting behind the wheel..i think its smart and if people are scared to get arrested maybe they wont drink so hard - because we all know someone that is a bad drunk

Yeah but who says these people are driving?

What if I have a few too many (and who's to say what too many is?) and are cabbing it or walking?
Will they still arrest you?

Next bars will have a 2 drink limit.

Re: Ok I think this is asinine

what next arresting for getting drunk in your own home???

how about stopping terroist instead- or drug dealers- or murders

if a stalker threatens you- they can't be arrested until they do something overt- so the same prinicple should apply to people drinking

Wait- Someone OWNS the bar...so technically doesn't it make that private property therefore not pubically intoxicated?Chat Icon

Re: Ok I think this is asinine

I understand wanting to prevent people from driving drunk. However not everyone who is drunk at a bar is going to drive. I think that the police should rethink this and find better things to occupy themselves.

True, but some people can be very quiet, mellow, and smashed. A drunk is not necessarily noisy. I am sure that people have caused drunk driving accidents and witnesses may not have known the person was drunk.

Thats what I was thinking! Usually in bars its not the drunkest person being the loudest and most annoying, its the biggest a$$shole.

As usual, they have the right problem in mind with the wrong solution. How about finding people another way home? I wish they would do that for Long Island.

That's what I was thinking, but I think because it's not like a private home but a business that caters to the public...I think it's ridiculous though.
