Cooper's latest adventure at the vet

Thursday night DH got home from work to find Cooper with a few welt-like hives on his head and face. Hives aren't a new thing for us and Cooper... last spring he had tiny hives all over his body. Nothing a cortizone shot and some benadryl didn't help.

So, we decided to give him some benadryl and wait it out, monitor the hives and his breathing (when we took him to the vet last spring bc of the hives the dr. mentioned that his breathing must be monitored in case the hives caused swelling in his mouth and throat). So by around 10pm the swelling was down and by morning his was back to his normal, handsome, hive-free self. Off to work we went (assuming too that he was just bit by a spider... assuming further that we killed said spider that morning bc there was a spider on the ceiling).

6pm Friday I get a call from DH that we're going to the vet as soon as I get off the train. The hives are back and worse! DH has been known to get a little dramatic so I didn't think much of it until I actually saw Cooper - it was pretty bad... and of course I took pics!

You can see the swelling all around his eye in this picture...

Thankfully the Dr. said he thinks it's just due to seasonal allergies and can be treated with benadryl every 8 hours when the need arises. He injected Coop with a liquid form of benadryl and steroids and we had to wait with Coop for about a half hour to see if the swelling went down (luckily it did otherwise we would have to give him another injection)... but while we were waiting the poor little guy couldn't even keep his eyes open.

So, there's another thing to add to the long list of Cooper health issues that we need to keep an eye out for.

ohh poor baby....mine just broke out in hives last week...they were not quite as big as coops but were alll over her body-everywhere! we were so scared! we gave her children's benadryl too, she got a shot and some meds....she is fine now....we think it was from the rice we fed her to try to harden her stool!

Wow, I'm really sorry you all have to go through this! I hope he gets better soon so he can be his perky self. The benadryl must take the spunk out of him, right? Poor little guy.

Totally. He was nowhere to be seen all weekend. In bed for hours and only woke up when we had to give him his scheduled dose of benadryl (Dr. advised every 8 hours).

Thanks for all the hugs!! Chat Icon
