Please read and see if you have any thoughts for me
Okay so i have never run a day in my life.
About 2 months ago I started training for a 5K that will be on May 2nd.
I definetly over did it at first. I ran 6 days a week and pushed myself a little bit further then I probably should have, I also was wearing the worsr running sneakers ever (Nikes)
So I started to have bad pain in my left leg (front, but inner side of my shin). I would ice it everyday when I got home and I was in major pain.
I decided to finally go to a dr. went to an orthopedist and got an MRI, he thought I had a stress fracure.
MRI showed nothing, so dr said its probably just shin splints.
I have not run in 2 weeks so you would think my leg would be fine, but yesterday I walked and just did a few quick sprints during my walk and my leg is killing me.
I actually cant even touch the side of my leg where it hurts, its so soar.
Part of me is scared that it really isnt shin splints, I mean how could this be after 2 weeks rest and barely running at all yesterday. How am I going to tackle this 5K?
I know this is long and I apologize but does it sound like shin splints to you? DO you think it could be something else? o you have any suggestions for me to be able to make it to this race?
TIA Jess

I can't say if it is shin splints b/c I don't recall having had them. It sounds like it is b/c of the inner shin pain. Icing it is good.
However, I will say this...you definitely overdid it and too much, too soon causes injuries.
My 3 thoughts are this:
1-Rest and give it time.
2-If you do decide to go ahead with the 5K, take it easy and listen to your body. If that means walking here and there, WALK!
3-Find a good beginners program, such as the Couch to 5K program, and start there. Your muscles, bones, ligaments, heart and lungs need to adapt to the new activity and pushing them too soon and too fast can be detrimental.
Running SEEMS like something that should be easy and come quickly. The reality is that the older we get, the more time we need to build a base slowly with running in order to just go out for a run.
Feel better!

Re: Please read and see if you have any thoughts for me
Is the pain close to your knee? I had terrible pain in my inner shin close to my knee & my doc told me I had bursitis. Maybe it actually is a stress fracture, but it's not showing up on the MRI... I had that in my leg from running and with rest it took a very long time to heal, like yours is. Also did your doc say anything about the cartilage in your knee?
I understand your frustration. I'm trying to train for a 5K now, and I'm having all these pains in my back running down through my leg, I think it's a pinched nerve and even with rest it's not getting better. I know how annoying it is, to have the motivation & really want to run normally & not be able to physically. I hope you are able to find out what's wrong & feel better
