Drive or Amtrak to Ft. Lauderdale?

The price difference would only be about $100.

My parents take the Auto Train, but I don't know if it goes into Fort Lauderdale, they love it. its very convenient and you have your own car and your own stuff.

I would take the train - it's more comfortable, you can walk around, they have snack cars, etc. But then I think road trips are a form of torture.

I would probably do Amtrak, but then you have to factor in the money for a rental car.

My DH's brother regularly travels Amtrak from Tampa to NY and it's hell for him. He has no choice because he brings 4 boxes of tools with him for work that he can't fly with and his wife in Tampa needs their only car while he's away. After listening to his expereience, if I had the choice, I would drive.

Are you talking about the autotrain? If so I didn't think it went to Fr Lauderdale but I have heard good things about it if you get a room rather than just seats but I have never done it and didn't find it cheaper than flying.

If you are talking about a regular Amtrak train - I would probably opt to drive - what accommodations are you talking about - sleeper car? regular seats? I have taken amtrak to lancaster a few times and that is a short ride but not fun. If you have your own car you can go on your own schedule, eat, rest, etc when you want and not on someone else's schedule. Are you taking a cruise? Plan to arrive the day before b.c I think they can run late and then you might miss the ship.

Re: Drive or Amtrak to Ft. Lauderdale?

My father would use autotrain from FL, I believe he drove from Naples to Orlando(?not 100% sure on this) and then autotrain stops /terminates in DC, & then he would drive to LI.

I have done the Train from Tampa to NYC a few times...I would get a sleeper car...I would go crazy if I didn't have the option of my own sleeping space.
