Do's and Don'ts

In your opinion what are the top do's and don'ts during pregnancy?

Since I just found out I'm pg and this being my first I'm just curious what should I or shouldn't I be doing?

For example, my DH did all the vacuuming for me today, but I just scrubbed the bathroom tub with comet. Is that ok?

Thanks!

Do get a lot of rest
Do drink lots of water
Do eat small meals through out the day
Do take your vitamins

Don't drink, smoke, eat raw fish or undercooked ground meat.

Don't let yourself get hungry - that can trigger nauseusness a lot of times.

Re: Do's and Don'ts

It depends on what your doctor tells you. I was not allowed to work out in the first trimester or lift anything heavy. I would err on the side of not doing anything strenuous until you see the doctor.
Then, there are all the foods/drinks you can't have. No alcohol, raw sushi, rare meat, soft cheeses, etc. Some doctors say diet drinks and caffeine once per day are OK, some do not. Again, I would not drink diet soda or caffeine until you speak to your doctor. However, my doctor told me that one cup of caffeinated coffee per day was fine. I hope this helps. Chat Icon

I woould have had DH scrub the bathroom. You shouldnt be doing anything like that and inhaling fumes from cleaners. I clean the bathroom but he scrubs the tub. I vacuume sometimes but mostly DH does.

Dont do any heavy lifting. Take it easy and rest.

Well, soon, you will probably be too tired to do any scrubbing, so I won't even bother to tell you not to do those things!Chat Icon
However, I agree with whomever said DO drink plenty of water and make sure you're eating. That's really important.

And DO listen to yourself. Take it slow on the days you are tired. The worst thing you can do is over-exert yourself. Your body will tell you when it's time to give up most household tasks. I knwo mine did!

All of this! And I say whatever your comfort level is. Of course no heavy lifting or straining! No inhaling funky fumes. If you feel like doing light cleaning, vacuuming, go ahead! I actually enjoy cleaning Chat Icon and felt bad having DH or the family help out at times.

Agree with the others...

Do listen to your body - eat when you're hungry, sleep when you're tired.
Do drink a lot of water, helps with nausea and with prenatals with iron.
Do try your best to quit smoking, drinking, etc.
Do take everything in moderation

Do not feel guilty about taking it slow
Do not stress yourself out - the pregnancy is out of your hands - it's pure biology & prayers after conception.
Do not take everything you read about or people's opinion on your pregnancy as gospel - none of us went to medical school.

Re: Do's and Don'ts

I agree with all of this.

At 34 weeks, physically I've been able to do pretty much everything I was able to do before, of course sitting and bending is getting harder, but as long as you feel well, you should not have to limit what you do. As far as lifing, I don't lift anything I would consider heavier than a todder. I figure that if I had another child I would be taking care of them, as all other mothers already do so tat would entail lifting them, and I use that as my judge.

p/s - don't necessarily take everything that those who went to medical school say as gospel either. There are many different views and opinions on alot during pregnancy. Listen to what your doctor says and get information on your own as well if you aren't sure or have questions or doubts.

Last piece of advice - try to enjoy this wonderful time in your life. It doesn't happen that often for us (a couple of children usually, and that's it).

No lifting anything heavy.
No climbing on chairs/ladders.
Don't push yourself too hard or try to do too much in one day, especially when it comes to cleaning the house.

I just want to add one thing

DON"T obbess about your weight gain. YOu are growing a baby, and that baby needs nutrients. The weight will come off after that baby is born!
