Re: Dog Parks...
we took ollie once. She had a great time but she was the smallest dog and it made me really nervous. I'm still in search for a small dog park because she does love playing with other dogs.

Re: Dog Parks...
We bring Maddie to Blydenburgh but haven't since early winter when we had a bad experience with a Great Dane puppy getting a little too agressive.
DH tried to break it up a few times because the owner was ignoring it or laughing and then a group of other owners the guy was with were talking bad about US for trying to stop it
Makes me want to cry when I think about it because up until that time, it was always great and people were generally nice.

Re: Dog Parks...
Funny story, i went online looking for dog friendly parks/beaches to bring Jack to. I was so happy to see that Jones beach had a "section" that allowed dogs, part of field 5 i think (this was years ago).
Anywho, me and my bff drive out there with our dogs. It took only a minute to realize something was VERY different about this beach. It WAS a dog friendly beach, however, it was also a NUDE beach. We almost died in embarassment, here we are strolling (fully clothed) with our pooches and there is dozens of totally nude people just sunbathing away !!! TOOOO FUNNY! We had no idea there WERE EVEN nude beaches on li...live n learn !

Other than that one incident, it's great but again, for me the situation was upsetting because it was like WE were being made to be the bad, inexperienced owners (Maddie is our 4th dog together - we are not novices!!).
ETA: Plus it really p*ssed my DH off so it was just stressful all around!

Re: Dog Parks...
The dog parks on LI are as follows:
Blydenburgh in Smithtown - has a small dog and big dog run
West Hills in Huntington - has a big dog run by the stables and a small dog run off of Sweet Hollow Road
Cedar Creek Park - has a big dog run and a small dog run
Wantagh Park - big dog run and small dog run
There's a run in Huntington by the dumps - it's just one run. There's also a run in Middle Island behind the old KMart - it's also one run.
You can also take your dogs to Gardiners Park (Bayshore), Southaven Park (Yaphank), Belmont State Park (Babylon), Hempstead Lake State Park(Hempstead) and Blydenburgh and walk them on the trails....
ETA: I'm not a huge fan of dog runs anymore, the last few times a dog has gotten aggressive with Misty and when she starts to fight back, I get in trouble. She doesn't really like them anymore and tends to just stand next to me....so I have taken to just walking her on trails where she can run around in the woods with maybe one or two other dogs....better for both of us really.

This is what I think will probably happen with us. Maddie goes to camp twice a week so I don't feel guilty that she's not socializing.

Re: Dog Parks...
This will be my 3rd year of trying to accomplish the dog park.. I take Lola to Baypark.. They have 2 dog area's.. 1 for small dogs and one for big ones.. She Hates it!!!!!!!!!!! I even feel alittle out of place.. Its very clicky there no one says hello, I sit on a chair and Lola is begging me the whole time to pick her up.. All the other dogs play and run.. She is up my A$$.. Its embarrasing.. I try to walk in the middle of the play ground and not sit and she follows me with her tail between her legs inbetween my legs.. She is so friendly and fun but in this enviorment she is such a jerk.. She loves other dogs at my house and in my yard.. So i have sort of resigned my self to trying this again.. Some dogs just dont like the park.. But its me who is so disappointed.. I am still going to go at least another time this year.. Maybe she changed alittle..

Re: Dog Parks...
On roundswamp road by plainview (not sure of town right off nothern state for roundswamp) there is a dog park. They have a big dog park and one for 25 lb and under. I LOVE it. I've taken tinkerbell 2 times and even though she's 4 lbs i dont' worry b/c the dogs are little. I would worry abou ther getting trampeled with teh bigger dogs. But i like this one!

The first time I went to Blydenburgh, I went with Gerty & Misty and Karacg & Scout. We had a blast! We didn't go to the dog run area. We went to the first left where it has the sign for rowboats. There are trails there through the woods, some for horses & dogs, some just for dogs.
I've been back to the same area at least 10 times since. Last week, we took the trail and it went a few miles and hooked all the way around to the dog run area so we tried it out. Brinkley actually had a great time, no fights, no humping, no crazy owners. That was, until a woman pulled up and things got... weird. A couple of women I was talking to said they were leaving and since Brinkley looked pooped anyway, we did too.
The run is probably a crap shoot, depending on when you go. I would imagine weekends are worse, with more people there than normal.
By the way, was the Great Dane a silvery gray and named Diamond?

Re: Dog Parks...
And by the way. Brinkley is getting neutered tomorrow but when he's healed, we could arrange to meet at the park. It's a different experience when you have people and dogs you trust with you.

I've taken Captain Bob to Southaven park and he loves there. He's always the smallest dog and is very friendly.
